How long of a reception?

Hi guys! I’m totally stuck. We toured my DREAM venue and it was amazing. Only problem, the rental time for the space is only 4 hours. To add extra time it’s $500 per hour which adds up super quick! My question is, how long is a typical wedding reception? If I’m thinking 30 mins for the ceremony, and 1 hour for cocktail hour/pictures, that only leaves us with two and a half hours for dinner and dancing... that doesn’t seem like enough time at all! Other venues we have looked at have 9 hour rentals and I just don’t get it!

I’d say you want at least 6 hours for ceremony, cocktail and reception plus time to set up & clean up. That’s a fairly standard block of time where I am.

We get 5 hours total. In my opinion about 4.5-5 hours is great for weddings, sometimes anything beyond that can be too much. The other venue we were considering gave us 7 hours but loved this venue and we're ok with getting 2 hours less.

We have our space for about 3 hours, but we're just doing dinner and dessert so I don't expect it to take the entire time. Smiley smile

Thank you all for your replies!!! I’m loving having the option to ask other brides for advice on these kind of things! I actually ended up finding another venue that I might like more than the original!! This one costs the same and the rental time is 8am-midnight with additional clean up hours available free of charge! And it includes a day-of coordinator so basically I’m sold! Thanks again and good luck to you allSmiley smile

My ceremony/reception is 6-10, with 2 hrs early arrival time. And 1 hr allowed time to get my things together afterwards. So, really 4-11. $450.00 for 1 hr additional time. No first look, but want to try to get as many pictures together prior and right after.

Does that include vendor clean up as well or do they get another hour to clean up? A lot of venues are like this, I think it’s a bait and switch, they KNOW people need more time. Don’t try to fit your day into their timeline you won’t be happy with it. Agree to pay more or find something else. My reception is 6:30-7:30 cocktail hour, 7:30-8:45pm dinner, 8:45-12am midnight, so 5.5hrs.
