How long for photos?

FutureMrsR, on June 19, 2017 at 9:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

How long did you allot after the ceremony for photos? (And if you're married, how long did it actually take to take photos, not counting the time it took (if any) to drive from ceremony to reception?) Was it the full hour? Or less?

Our wedding is small and just immediate family (24 people), so we'll probably want photos with all the guests at the ceremony location before we all go the reception location. My ceremony location works by one reserving it for a set amount of time (they only do small events that don't take all day), so I want to know what to expect so I can reserve it long enough when we put our deposit down soon.

We did wedding party pics before the ceremony and we gave ourselves 1 hr and 45min and it was not long enough. Granted we spent lots of time traveling to sites and walking around so....

As for formal shots with guests etc, we did it right after the ceremony. Did a group shot (87) guests altogether in a different room and it took less than 10 minutes while the staff were clearing out the ceremony area (chairs etc). Then we went into the ceremony room for formals and managed to get every guest (in specified groups) - about 12-15 shots in about 15 minutes!

We were very organized, the DJ announced the names of guests who were to go into the room to take pictures and gathered the next group of guests while the first group was taking pictures. We were ahead of schedule.

So all in I'd say it took 30 minutes. But I'd schedule 1 hr just in case.

Our photographer set aside 30 minutes (15 minutes for group/family shots, 15 minutes for shots with DH and I) We got through group shots pretty quickly because we took them in the ceremony space and had our families hang back while everyone else went to the ceremony. We got to spend about 20 minutes taking pictures with just the 2 of us and then we had some time by ourselves before the reception started.

Are you doing a first look or will you and FS be taking pictures after the ceremony? If you do a first look that would probably cut down on how much time pictures would take.

There isn't much point to doing a first look; we'd just be taking photos in the same place but before the ceremony instead of after. And we'd have to pay for that time still, again, just before the ceremony instead of after.

We did immediate and extended family photos after the ceremony which took 15-20 minutes because I have a large family.

FWIW, we took 90 minutes for our first look photos, along with a couple of wedding party pics.

Formal shots took a little less than a half hour after the wedding. We didn't do a first look, so we didn't do any prior to the ceremony.

I'm one of seven kids and the last to get married, and DH is one of five with all but one married. In addition to wedding party photos, we did sibling photos as well since they all weren't in the wedding. We also did one large photo with our grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, nieces, and nephews and had 48 people in the shot. With 24 guests, you'll have fewer people than we did in formal photos!

We're doing the majority of our pictures before our ceremony. Our photographer allotted 1 hr to first look pics, 15 minutes to bridal party and 15 minutes to family. After the ceremony, we're spending 30 minutes on a few more bride/groom pics at our reception venue.

We will be getting there about 90 minutes before for bridal party pictures and such. Then couple pictures and family pictures after the ceremony (about 40 minutes)

Try to take as many pictures before the wedding as possible. I see you're not doing a first look - so try to get all the family pictures and bridal party pictures done before the wedding if you can, so you can spend the time after the ceremony on bride and groom portraits. There is NO WAY we could have taken all of our pictures in just an hour.

Thanks for the advice! No bridal party, it's really just 20 people. Whether we do it before or after makes little to no difference, because everyone at the wedding will be at the photos. Just looking to see how long I can expect it all to take.
