How long for Dinner?

Chasity, on February 26, 2020 at 11:14 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

Hello WW,

We are working on our timeline for the ceremony and reception. Our ceremony will start at 5pm and we will have the dinner reception start at 6pm right after the ceremony. My questions for brides is how long should dinner be? We are having a buffet style meal for 130 guests and we have the venue until 10pm. I'd like to reserve a couple hours for dancing and mingling so ideally I'd like to be finished with dinner, toasts, special dances and cake cutting by 8pm but is that too much in too little time? Help!!

I would ask your caterer and venue how long they expect it to take! Our dinner took close to 2 hours but that’s because we had a multi course plated meal.

I’ve seen some people start some of the activities while people are still eating and that’s fine! Especially the first dances, etc.

Wow 1.5-2 hrs seems like a long time for dinner to me. I haven’t gone to my venue planning meeting and we aren’t sure if we are doing buffet or plated yet (depends on number of guests for space reasons)...but I would have guessed like 1 hour. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll definitely be checking what the venue thinks on this one!

I believe our dinner took about 1.5 hours. We had 100 guests and we had a seated dinner.

Wow! I had a meeting with my venue coordinator last week and we were discussing the timeline and she says dinner should only take about an hour. We are doing buffet. We are going to have 2 buffets that each have 2 sides so 4 sides altogether. Along with a served salad.

We're having a sit down dinner and we were told they can get dinner done in about 45 minutes -1 hour. and they reserve about 45 minutes before that for dances, toasts, entrances, etc (which I thought that was a bit long). Just ask your venue how fast 130 person buffet usually takes.

We opened up the dance floor like 5 mins after the first course was served lol. If people weren’t done they didn’t have to get up and dance yet, or they could always go back to their food.

We are having 100 people and serving a buffet. I estimated about an hour.. I hope it’s enough. Lol But after the hour mark we will do father/daughter dance, toasts, and immediate cake cutting, etc.. So as long as everyone is seated with their food by then we will be fine.

1.5 -2hrs. It will take. so 8pm for dancing works. That is only if you don't have tons of speeches.

Dinner from start to finish should not take more than 1 1/2 -2 hours.
