How long does it take to take photos before the ceremony?

1Sooner.fan, on January 16, 2017 at 11:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

We are trying to figure out what time to start our ceremony. We want a morning wedding, but our venue doesn't open until 10:30 AM.

Originally, I was thinking we could hold the ceremony at 11:45, and then lunch would be served at 12:15 at the latest. However, I realized that I forgot to account for the time it takes to take bridal party pictures before the ceremony, as well as the time it takes to get ready.

I am planning on doing my own hair and makeup, and letting my bridesmaids do theirs as well, so that shouldn't take too long. But how long do pre-ceremony photos normally take?

How early do you think is the earliest we should plan on starting our ceremony?

There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before a timeline is made. Definitely chat with your photographer. Before I work with them on a timeline I ask the following questions :

    - how many in your BP?

    - how many in your family?

    - are you doing a 1st Look?

    - no matter what, all photography should be finished 30 prior to the ceremony with regards to family, BP and the couple.

With an 11:45 ceremony, pics need to be done by 11:15. Mid size family takes me about 30 minutes. Mid size BP is another 30 minutes. First Look/Bride and Groom 30 minutes. Tail end of bridal pre and details 30 minutes. Photos start at 9:00am All done at same location. Tight but doable.

I would definitely discuss this with your photographer and think through all of @Kathleen Smith's follow up questions!!

My photographer also had 30 minute blocks like Kathleen listed - so 30 minutes for first look, 30 minutes for family portraits, 30 minutes for the whole wedding party, 30 minutes for each wedding party side, plus time for detail shots (pictures of the rings, invitations, your dress on the hanger), and if you want getting ready pictures!

I'd work backwards from 11:45 am, to see if you can make this work! You'd want to be finished with pictures and "hidden away" by 11:15 am, at least 2 hours for photos so they would start by 9:15 am at the latest, plus getting ready time - which if you are all doing your own hair and makeup you should be good with 2 hours, so that's a morning meet up time of 7:15 am!
