How long does it take to serve a buffet?

FutureMrs.Dyson, on August 30, 2016 at 12:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

We have 125-130 guests. How long would you think it'll take to serve a buffet. I've only been to buffer weddings but I don't remember how long it took to get everyone served. I do remember that it sucked when they let everybody go at once. So I was thinking of seating older grandmothers, aunts and uncles together at tables 1,2 or 3 so they can go first. Then call 3 tables up at a time. There's only 18 tables. What do you think and how long do you think we should schedule for dinner to be served and ate?

We had half that amount. I think it took about 30 minutes, but our DJ took care of how everyone was released to the buffet. Do you have a DOC, coordinator, or a DJ to help you with this?

We have a DJ. We aren't quite sure if we will have a DOC yet. Depends on budget.

Our DJ set up a timeline and everything for us. I would talk to him about how he plans on releasing everyone for dinner. Assuming he's going to be keeping track of the time...

    Ask your caterer...

It might be me, but isn't that the obvious answer?

Beachylauren, yeah it is. I was just trying to go over a rough draft of our schedule. I hate to bother him though.

We had 110 people at reception and it went rather fast. The caterer had a staff member release the tables. I want to say everyone was sitting and eating within 20-30 mins.

LOL @GymRat. I work with a catering company on the sad and it can definitely take 30-45 minutes for your amount of guests. We've worked with DJs or MCs a variety of ways to make this go faster, and frankly, it won't. If you call the elderly first, you can only pray that they'll move faster than usual. They won't. Everyone will still stand there and pick and choose what they want, if they want a little less or a little more. Caterers look at where people are in the line before deciding when the next table is called. Generally, once the last person in line is about to pick up their plate, the next table is called. That way, they've spent more time sitting down rather than standing in line.
