How long does it take to alter a dress?

Hailey, on August 20, 2019 at 3:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

My dress was supposed to be finished on Saturday August 17th, but the owner of the dress shop called me to tell me that their independently contracted seamstress was sick and we had to move the final fitting date. I got a call yesterday evening saying that she will be out of commission for the next couple months and my wedding is on October 12th. The owner also told me that nothing had been done to my dress. The straps still need to be moved, the hips need to be taken in, a layer of crinoline needs to be removed, it needs to be hemmed several inches and I need a bustle. I'm panicked because I now need to go and get my dress from the shop and find another seamstress with six and a half weeks before the big day. Do you think this is enough time to do all of that? I've tried contacting several seamstresses but haven't heard back from anybody yet.

I think you have plenty of time to do that. I had my dress and veil completely custom made and they only needed about 6 weeks to do that. I think an experienced seamstress should be able to make those alterations in about 2 weeks or less depending on their workload.

If they get a move on things I think you will be fine. 6 weeks is still plenty of time, but I think I would try and find another seamstress. If she will be out for 2 months, this wont work.

I think It depends on the person and what needs to be done. My seamstress will be finished with my alterations in a month. I only need the breast pads put in, sleeves shortened, a bustle, and my neckline moved up. It may or may not need to be taken out a little.

I would take it into several shops, I bet they can do it but you may have to pay rush fees.

I needed my entire back ripped out and replaced, the skirt repaired, a costly and difficult hem, cups, sleeves and a bustle and it took 4 days. You’re golden! ❤️ They work pretty fast, you have plenty of time.

I’m also getting married on Oct 12th & my dress is going into the shop on Aug 29th. I went to the shop, showed them a pic of me wearing the dress & they were like here’s ur schedule & here’s the cost.
I will have 2 - 3 fittings total & the dress will be ready by September 28th. I’m getting it hemmed, taken in & bustle.
