How late is too late to cash a check

Ostrich, on September 28, 2015 at 6:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Several checks were sent to my parents house and they put it in a stack of mail for us to pick up. Our wedding was end of May. I feel guilty cashing these checks so far after, and don't want to mess up their checking account. These two checks are two of my parents church friends in their bible study and one of my teammates. I texted my teammate since we're on that level, but don't want to reach out to them. Thoughts?

There's a chance you might not be able to cash them. A bank in the US is under no obligation to cash or deposit a personal check presented more than six months from the date on the instrument. Assuming they aren't more than six months old already (received before the wedding), your clock is ticking.

As far as propriety, your friends intended it as a gift; I think it would be poor etiquette to *not* accept at this point.

Most banks only look at dates with amounts of 2,500 and under. You are still within the 6 month period. Anyone who makes out a cheque should know that the cheque can be cashed at anytime within the 6 months. I wouldn't worry about it honestly. They should know you have been busy and getting settled over the busy summer months and your wedding. I say cash the money!!! haha

Thanks guys! Good to know about the 6 month thing!! I really wanted to cash it but wasn't sure of the etiquette more than the logistics. I also didn't write a thank you note since they didn't attend and I didn't realize, so I think I'll cash it and send a nice thank you out tomorrow and be done with it. Thanks!!!

I work at a bank. Checks are stale dated (no good) after 6 months.

Contact the people who wrote out the checks and explain.

I'd contact them out courtesy, just to thank them and to let them know you're going to cash them, or ask when that would work for them.

I agree with Celia. Send a Thank You card first, apologize for the delay in said thank you card, and explain that you will be cashing it on, say, the first of the month.
