How Late is Too Late for Dinner?

firefly620, on July 20, 2009 at 2:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

My ceremony begins at 6:30pm (a requirement of the venue). It will be short - probably like 15-20 minutes and then I plan to have a cocktail hour and then dinner at the reception (same location). I am concerned however that even with food at the cocktail hour, that serving dinner at 7:45 or 8:00pm might be too late for guests. Does this sound too late? Should I shorten the cocktail "hour"?

I have been to a wedding where we didnt have dinner till 9pm. I personally was fine with it but my FI was in pain cause he was so hungry!!! They also had a cocktail hour and whatnot but in all honestly it did seem kinda late...

Our dinner will be around 7... which I thought was perfect... why do you have to have your ceremony at 6:30???

My time is similar but the cocktail hour is more more like 30 minutes to keep the guests busy while we do post ceremony photos because it's at the same location for the reception. I'm trying to keep dinner at 7:30 so it's not too late for cake and dancing since my reception is outdoors.

Our wedding is at a local winery and they are open for business until 6pm so they recommend that ceremonies start at 6:30 and my invitations have gone out with that time so I'm locked into it now. The cocktail hour is outside and the sun is supposed to be setting between 7:20-7:30ish so it's important to me that it at least last that long. But maybe I'll cut it short and end at 7:30 so dinner is at a more reasonable time. I'm just confused because I tend to be an early eater, but I always see tons of people out to dinner at restaurants around 8pm. I'm not sure what is considered typical.

I think that sounds fine. As long as people know what to expect, they can plan accordingly!

Any later than 8 and I'd start to think about worrying about it but so long as you have a sanck or 2 rolling aroudn happy hour you should be fine!

Cocktail one hour max seems fine...they can soak in the atmosphere and mingle and snack.
