How late is 'pushing it' for June 2020 wedding dress shopping?

Bianca Hock & Scott Horwitz, on July 11, 2019 at 3:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hi There! Our wedding is booked for June 2020 in Connecticut. I was raised in San Diego, so I really want my California-based mom and sister to be apart of the bridal gown shopping — however, I don't want to wait too late to shop. They plan to fly into CT to help me keep my dress alterations local. Their ideal time to fly in would be sometime in October, but I'm hearing that I really should start shopping 10 months prior — should I make the push for us to shop this August or September instead? Thanks in advance!! Smiley heart

If you plan on buying something off the rack, October should be fine. If you need to have a dress ordered, then you might be pushing it. Some places take longer than others for orders. Some take weeks, 3 months, 6 months plus time for alterations. I was able to buy a dress in that short of time, but it was off the rack.

They say 9-10 months before your wedding to give you time to order your dress, have it arrive, and get alterations. However, it really depends on your designer. I chose a Hayley Paige dress, who is an American designer. So it only took me 3 months to get my dress in. So ordering my dress in January 2019 for my October 2019 wedding gave me more than enough time. So I think with 8 months, you will be fine as long as you don't choose a designer that has long ordering/shipping times. And if you do, you can always chose to pay the rush fee. But again, I think 8 months will be just fine.

My wedding is in November and I just bought mine in February. The sales girl told me it was just at the right amount of time so I would say no later than 8 months. You have to make sure there is plenty of time to get it altered not just the time for the dress to initially come in.

I would aim for 10 months! That way you leave plenty of time for alterations.

I think you'll be fine within 8 months. My friend ordered her dress in January for her October wedding and it was in within a month. I know that's super quick, not sure if it was because of the designer (Maggie Sottero) but I think you'll have plenty of time.

My dress took 6 months to arrive and 3 months for 3 alterations appointments. It really depends on the store!

I think you should be fine. It took my dress 4 months to come in and I am starting alterations 2 months before. Also if you really like a dress and can afford it rush shipping is also an option.

I just got my dress last weekend and they told me it would take 6-7 months to come in because it’s a new design. Our wedding is in May, so that’ll put me around January-early feb. HOPEFULLY it doesn’t that that long, but in my opinion, the sooner the better

You will be able to find a dress but you just might not have your pick of every dress in the store. My dress took 7 months to come in and some dresses take longer. You’ll tell the sales associate when your wedding is and they should only show you dresses that will come in in time.

Thanks for all these great responses, Ladies! Your honesty is very helpful — I convinced my mom to fly in two months sooner, hopefully we hit the sweet spot in timing. Thanks, All ♥️
