How important is the DJ's personality?

Mrs. Turner2B, on January 23, 2010 at 5:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

My fiance and I met with a DJ today. The price sounds very reasonable for what comes with his services and he seems to really want to make sure the day is about us and that all our needs are taken care of. He also seems to want to go through every detail to make sure he knows exactly what we want as far as music and traditional events that go on at the wedding. The only thing we are concerned about is his personality. He seems very preppy and straigh laced. Very sweet guy, but I dunno if this will affect the atmosphere of our party. We are having a Dodger themed wedding and want it to be elegent but really fun...and we want a DJ that will get the party started and going. He says he can do that but he's not the type of DJ who is very vocal about, shouting things and such. If we pick the right music and have the right people there, is the DJ's personality very important?

I think it is very, very important. Think about...anybody can stand up there and play music (that you already said you liked so he knows you want to hear) but not everyone can get folks out on a dance floor to DANCE and enjoy the music. My suggestion to you guys would be to ask about a function (mainly another wedding) that he will DJ. This will give you the 100% in you decision. You never know...you can have a great guy who is bubbly in person at signing the contracts but when it comes to the "moment" he can barely be heard.....so I would ask to see him in action. Or if he had references call them and even ASK if they have any video from there wedding that shows him at work that you can sneak a peek at. Just my two cents.

I agree with most of that except the part about watching him at another wedding. I would not want someone at my wedding that was not invited just to listen to the DJ. It is kinda rude. He is there for YOUR wedding not to be conducting business for another event. He should be focusing on your wedding.

Sorry imtk I just think that one point is kinda rude. Would you want someone at your wedding talking to your DJ while he should be working at your weding. On the other hand I agreed with everything else.

Ditmara- maybe he was trying to be business like while you were talking to him about your wedding maybe he does have the personality you want you just need to figure out a way to find out.

As a DJ, I agree fully with Marcie & Mike. Most pro DJ's I know do not invite prospective clients to other peoples weddings.

As far as personality goes, you have to decide how much personality and interaction you want from a DJ, and feel comfortable that the person you hire can accomplish that. Most good DJ's can adapt their personality to fit the style of the client to a degree. If, however, you are looking for the type of DJ who gets on the floor, leads group dances and that type of thing you need to make that clear, and a DJ should be honest with you if that is not their style (or if like me they have 2 left feet Smiley smile )

I would speak again with the prospective DJ and get specific answers from him as to what he does to work the crowd, his mic style, etc.

Also check with his references, and ask what they thought of his on stage personality. Good Luck.

I agree as well being a DJ and providing various services....I would ask about referrals and have more then one meeting with you dj...this way the more communication the better..So there will be no question about your demands and his flexability....But anyone can say whatever to get your money... so keep that in mind....also shop around and get alternate prices for what your needs are...never hurts to have options.....if you have any questions dont hesitate to message us...congrats

    Ditmara,

Most DJs can adjust the degree of interaction and their communications to adapt to the event, but we can never change our personalities. If you are happy with everything else about this DJ, but require a party motivator type personality, bring it up directly. It's very likely that the DJ has worked with an MC who has the personality you are looking for. For what you want, you would likely need two people; i.e., an MC on the dance floor shouting "Go Ditmara" and a DJ behind the rig to mix the music.

I think personality is super important! I want an up beat fun DJ, not some mellow fellow..Ask for refrences from other couples and perhaps ask them how they thought he did.
