How hot is too hot?

SpringBride23, on July 31, 2017 at 7:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

We are torn between having our reception inside or outside (our venue allows both, ceremony is outside). I love the look of the outside reception, however I'm worried being outside for an extended period of time in Florida in October will be too hot. The average high in October in our area is about 85. We are thinking of a 3:00 pm ceremony, which would put guests outside in the sun for about 4 hours. The cocktail hour will be held inside, and there will be plenty of room for guests to take refuge in the A/C, I just don't want our guests to be miserable during the ceremony and reception. So, how hot is too hot? Does this scenario sound unreasonable?

Way too hot. Ceremony I'd be fine with but not reception too

Anything hotter than 75 would be too hot for me to be outside for that long. If it's full sun that's even worse.

Anything over 75 needs to be moved indoors. Sorry.

I would decline that wedding invitation so fast.

Move it inside or do something at sunset.

Have it later in the evening, or have an indoor backup plan.

Thanks everyone so far for the input! Myself, I'm used to FL heat, however my Midwest guests may not feel the same. It sounds like I will have to have the reception inside, from what everyone has said.

85 is too hot! I would say 70s is the best but even then everyone is different. FH sweats constantly and would never want to be outside for that long in dress clothes. Therefore we are having an indoor, November wedding lol

Kelsey, even the ceremony shouldn't be outside in 85-degree weather. That could be downright dangerous for some guests, even for a 15-minute ceremony.

Unfortunately, I think it is unreasonable. I am having my ceremony outdoors and it looks like it could be 80 that day - even 20 minutes outside scares me. What we are doing is Ceremony outside, cocktail hour will be set up for both indoor and outside ( bar will be both inside and out) and then dinner inside. This gives guests the option of going where they are most comfortable. Remember, you will be in a wedding dress, they get heavy and it might be you who suffers most being outdoors!

Actually, Meaghan, it's the elderly guests and those with medical conditions who suffer the most. No sympathy for the bride. Sorry. Do the responsible thing and have it inside.

Keep in mind your wedding party attire as well. We passed up some gorgeous outdoor venues because FH hates the heat and 85 + tux was a hard pass for him

Have the reception inside. Will guests have access to the outdoors after dinner if they wanted to enjoy the grounds after sunset? If they do, that sounds like a wedding I'd want to go to!

@WED18, Yes! The guests have access to the full property, which is a historic mansion and the grounds. What's even better is that the mansion is right on the Gulf of Mexico! The sunset will be awesome, i sure hope!

Ah no. I would skip the ceremony and just go to the reception. I sweat like a beast (after losing 70 pounds ugh----when i was heavier i never ever sweated).....

By that time of the year the sun will be setting earlier than typically and being on the gulf you should definitely have some breezes. Plus by that time of the evening it shouldn't be as bad. I'm Florida based as well so maybe I'm biased but I love being outside down here any chance I get.

I'm getting married in FL (October) also, and my ceremony is going to be at 4 (under shade) but my reception will be indoors because I think that during that month it will fluctuate depending on the week and I don't want to risk it. Florida isn't so much the hotness, but the humidity. Also, bugs. I personally wouldn't be able to do it.

Guests will be annoyed but think about your dress and your hair and makeup. You'll most likely be the most uncomfortable because you will be wearing the most.

As someone who was born and raised in the Midwest I can tell you that I and most (not all, but most) people I know here would not love or be used to that Florida heat in October lol. But I do think it's a nice option for guests to venture outside if they do choose to especially as the sun goes down, I bet that'll be really pretty to watch!

Yeah. 75 is like cut off for outside in formal clothes. You've also got to think about the humidity if you're anywhere but directly on the beach.

Way, way, way too hot. Anything over 74 is outside the comfort range of an average adult at rest.
