How expensive are the dress alterations?

Angie, on September 28, 2019 at 11:34 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9
I bought a beautiful dress but I am
petite so need to cut the length and my dress has so many layers that I am concerned about how much will need to spend for the alterations

My dress has several layers as well (with lace appliqués along the edge) and I need it be hemmed because I’m wearing flats the whole time. My seamstress quoted me $150-$200

I have my first appointment in December but based on what I told her my dress needed (I need it hemmed and brought in 1 - 2 sizes as well as add bustles), she is quoting me $100 - $450.

Is your dress lace where it needs to be hemmed? I've learned through quotes that my dress will be on the higher end of alterations because of the lace I have on it!

My dress had about 7 layers and I found a local seamstress through Facebook! For my hem, it was $70 but it definitely depends on the region you're in

For me to have my straps shortened, dress taken in about 2 inches in the waist, and 8 inches removed from my dress (about 6 layers) it was $500.

It depends on what really needs to be done. I'm average height, but I have a really petite torso so I knew that we would need to at least hem the dress and bring the dress up somehow so that it hits my natural waist instead of being too long, so I was expecting around $500. Kyleah is right -- if you have lace (I do), it adds to the costs because it's so intricate. All of the hemming and taking things in, plus adding a bustle and cups put me at $1,000 (I live in LA so things are also really expensive). After 3 fittings, everything turned out great, but keep in mind what you might think you need to have done might actually only be part of what needs to be done. Work with the person doing your alterations and make sure you get their full evaluation for what needs to be done.

They can get pretty expensive. I purchased my dress from a small mom and pop bridal salon and they have an onsite seamstress and because I purchased my dress from them my alterations were free.

Yes, I agree with what everyone has said. I'm petite and my dress is a ball gown with 10+ layers of tulle. Alterations were $930, including hem, bustle, adding cups, taking in at waist and chest area.

I've having a bustle, dress hemmed, and let out a small amount up top because the consultant ordered the wrong size...my price was about 240

My first quote was about 900 for a 1200 dress. Smiley sad I reached out to another and when she looked at it quoted me about 450. Yes! Mine has multiple layers with the horsehair trim. She commented at the last fitting that the skirt has been really difficult so I'm half expecting a higher cost at the end. Its almost done and coming together. Now I just want it to be right even if it costs a little more. I would budget 500 and hope for better. Just depends on how complicated the alterations are.
