How early to get your dress fitted??

Jennifer, on November 24, 2011 at 6:28 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I am eager to get it fitted of course.... but when I called around they said 3 months away was the time. Obviously I know I could get it fitted whenever I want lol, but just wondering what people's opinions on the matter are?

Also starting January we will no longer "care to prevent" having a baby. We won't be "trying" but we will no longer be preventing. So just incase..... you can't let it out once its taken in I'm assuming? lol

Hi Date Twin! I went in last week to an alterations shop and she said 3-4 months or so, they are slower during the holidays and she said spring will get busy. My first fitting will be in january and the final fitting will be two weeks prior to the big day. Depending on your dress maybe you can do a corset back so you can let out a little or adjust if you need to be a little more comfortable in the middle if you have an addition to the wedding party? LOL

That sounds about right, I had mine done about 2ish months before, well the first fitting anyways.. I'm not sure about the baby factor though..given that possibility I think that maybe 2 months? or then again if it happens you can just notify the shop about it..you CAN let it out again, it may just cost you a pretty penny depending...does your dress have a ton of layers/beading all over etc?

No my dress is pretty simple just white material and rouching (no idea on how to spell that! lol). I like the corset back idea but someone told me that might not work with my dress because they are already having to take it in alot. size 14 to size 8, so that would be too much? not sure. I never thought of the spring issue. maybe I'll head in around January too!

If you plan on loosing or gaining weight in the 3-4 months before your wedding, then you want to wait to have it altered.

I had mine initially altered 6 weeks before my wedding, with a final fitting 2 weeks before, in case I had changed and that was the minimium amount of time for an alteration. And I had! I had lost weight! So my dress ended up fitting perfectly.

I had a very good seamstress! She did all of the pageant gowns for Miss Houston.

I recommend having your first fitting 6 - 8 weeks prior to your wedding. It is best to alter the dress only once!!!! If you are worried about the timeline and the shop getting busy - call in January and get on the appointment book!

Same here when I went to get my dress fitted they told me 4 months.....I guess it will take 3 months to get your dress fitted.....And then they told me to have at least 3 fittings....First one is when my dress arrives.....Second is for to check for any mistake....And third one is still due to make sure the perfection....

I would definately wait as long as possible, especially if there's a good chance that your body will be going through some changes as the wedding approaches. Even without the "baby factor", many girls respond to bridal stress in different ways: some eat a lot more, others eat much less simply due to stress.

You CAN always do alterations well in advance, but why pay a seamstress (and they are not cheap) to undo/redo work that's already been done to accommodate your potentially changing figure?

To keep costs minimal, I would recommend waiting until 6 weeks before the wedding. Call a recommended seamstress in advance and make 3 fitting appointments over the 6 weeks, leaving 3-4 days cushion before the wedding with your final fitting to allow time for any last-minute fine-tuning.

Congratulations...on your wedding and your future family!

Hmm. I don't know about this. I'm having my first fitting in January and my wedding isn't until June. I also haven't really changed in size since 7th grade so I'm banking on a sure thing lol if you're no longer preventing getting pregnant, I would wait until March at least. Most women I know haven't shown until month 3 .

With the amount of work that is going need to be done on your dress, I would allow

at least 3 months. You should go at the same time of the month as your wedding, that way your body is the same cycle time as your wedding. I realize that it is not important to you about a certain point that you not worry about getting pregnant or not, but at

some point, during the alterations process, you will have to let your seamstress know in all fairness. Even though you will not show much at 3 - 4 months, there will be significant changes in the bustline and some in the waist. This matters in a garment that fits to the body like a second skin!

Usually bridal fittings are scheduled about 3 - 4 weeks apart, and the gown is finished about 2 weeks before the wedding.

Oh I let her know up front 100%. I told her right away that it was a possibility and she said it would be no problem and we would just leave that part of the dress to be altered last and close to my date.
