How early is too early to start sending out invitations?

Emily, on January 10, 2020 at 10:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

So, I have a large guest list (my FH and I both have very large families). At first, our wedding was all the hype as we had been together for 10 years. Now, a LOT has been happening. I've lost some close family members, some have become seriously ill including my oldest sister and my FMIL and other various situations. I'm really curious as just how many guests are actually planning on attending. I mean, if only a few is actually going to come I would like to plan accordingly and save some money but I would kinda need to know sooner than later as some of my vendors need to a count and down payment. We are getting married on June 21st of this year so when should I be sending the invitations? tia!

Invitations generally go out 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding.

6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. You can push it to 10 weeks if a lot of out of town guests. Usually you book your vendors based on how many you’re inviting and give final numbers when you get RSVPs 2-3 weeks before the wedding.

When do your vendors need a final headcount? I can’t imagine it’s sooner than like 4-8 weeks at the most?

We got married in early June and sent invites to our VIPs (just family and bridal party) in February, which was pretty early but some of my husband’s relatives were bugging us to send them because they wanted the invitation before booking their travel arrangements 🤷🏻‍♀️ We sent to everyone else in March (I think around 11 weeks before the wedding?) which was still on the early side. Our RSVP deadline was the month before the wedding, and all but 12 people RSVPd on time (we invited 148)

That's good to hear that early sends aren't the end of the world and people can still get it together and reply. Ours is 9.12.20, need a firm count by 8.13.20 I think, so I was planning on end of June/ July send with July 31 due date to round up stragglers in the 2 weeks.

Based on yours, did you leave them like 2 months or more to respond? Do you feel like that was beneficial (early responses?) if so I may send earlier in June and give them more time.

I am getting married in April. I plan to send my invitations out in about two weeks. That way everyone has time to get back to me before I finalize everything. I hope that everyone response because I have the post card stamped for return of the rsvps

Eh, not really honestly. The majority of people either responded immediately (like within the first week or two when they got the invitation) or waited until the week before it was due. There was very little in between honestly. I feel like people either are sure they’re coming and are excited about it or they’re procrastinators lol so regardless of when you send them I feel like most people are still going to fall into one of the two categories of “right away” or “last minute”
