How Early is Too Early to Send Invitations

Imani, on March 19, 2022 at 3:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18
Our wedding is 7/31/22. We recently got the invitations Wednesday. I see on the checklist it says June 4th to send out invitations - but is that too late? Is it too early to send out invitations next weekend?

Do not send them before 8 weeks before the wedding. Guests will lose and forget the information. They will also assume that you are looking for seat fillers at a later date (B listing). On the flip side, do not send them later than 6 weeks before the wedding for the same reason.

Have you contacted anyone as is standard with save the dates at 6-12 months ahead, either by word of mouth or phone/text/email/magnet?

I believe the projected date is more for guest in the same state as you. If you have mostly out of state guest, I would send in late April/May so those guest can make arrangements. Have you sent out save the dates?

Yes, so we did save the dates via text message in January and informed them that the formal invitation would follow.

We have a lot of guest from out of state. We both are from Illinois and have family members and friends that are flying in from there and other states. We did send our save the dates via text message in January.

Then send the invites at 6-8 weeks regardless of where they are located.

How exciting! I d send them out 8 (maybe even 9) weeks before. The mail has been super slow around me recently, the post office blames COVID and staffing shortages for it. Good luck!!!

Thanks a lot Rosebud! I didn’t even consider the post office possibly running behind.

Wedding date twins!!! I was thinking of send our invitations out the end of April/beginning of May because a lot of our guests are from out of town and I wanted to have enough time for them to send back the RSVPs (feel like some of them could be slower haha).

Congratulations Julie!! What state are you getting married in?
Also, we added our wedding website on the invitation so they wouldn’t have to mail them back. I think end of April is perfect timing.

    Hello! Congratulations!
Personally I think a month of notice is not enough but I’m not sure it all depends on you. My planner told me that since I’m having my wedding in April 2023, I should be sending out Save the dates around August 2022 and RSVPs November 2022. Hope this helps!

Our wedding is Aug 2022. We sent out Save the Dates in October and Invitations are going out April 1. We decided to base it off 80% of our guests are out of state and we have our first venue a head count meeting mid-late May. We hope to have everyone planned (and travel booked) ahead of time. We expect our 2nd head count venue meeting to shift up or down by maybe 5, but at least we have a general idea of who is coming and who is not.

I hope this helps! Congrats and Good Luck😀

Thank you so much Charmele! I think we will send ours out sooner because we’ve already have multiple people from out of town ask about accommodations.

EXACTLY!!! Once news hit our families from the Save the Dates, people started asking! We had to do our wedding block early! 5 months to go and we are already at 60% of our block. Folks are excited to get out for a family event after covid shut down.

Congratulations to you too Imani! We’re in Washington Smiley smile I thought about adding a website for the RSVPs but we have some older relatives that aren’t so tech savvy. I hope the rest of your planning is going well and wish you all the love and positive vibes on your big day!
