How early is too early for fittings/alterations?

Future Mrs. K, on November 2, 2018 at 9:05 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
I am getting married on June 23 and the lady who is doing my fittings and alterations contacted me saying she wants to get started on them in February. Is this too early? I feel like everything I saw said not to start them until about eight works before the wedding. I am not really trying to lose weight for the wedding, just maintaining what I am so I don’t think it would be a huge issue but I’m just curious on everyone else’s experiences with this.

Well my weight fluctuates so I wouldn't have ever agreed to this. Mine started about 6 weeks prior to my wedding. I don't see the harm in starting early if your weight generally always stays the same. You could also get started earlier but still have your final fitting / appt much closer to your wedding day.

My wedding is in July and my alterations are in March. I also thought this was early but it was when the bridal consultant who sold me my dress suggested I come in. I figure she's been doing this for years so she knows what she's doing and agreed to schedule for March. I'm also not trying to gain or lose any weight and I've been the same weight for years so I wasn't too concerned. I think since you said you are also maintaining your weight that it will be fine.

I was told 2-3 months before was standard, so February seems a bit early but not by much. Especially if your weight doesn’t fluctuate much, I wouldnt worry. Maybe push it to March?

My wedding was in October and alterations started in July. I had 3 appointments total. An initial appointment to see what needed to be done, second appointment to make sure the hem was ok and it was taken in properly, and a final appointment to try on the dress and make sure everything fit and looked perfect. So I would say 3 months in advance should be sufficient unless you have a lot of work that needs to be done or your seamstress knows she’s going to be super busy around the time of your wedding!

I'm getting married in July. I have three fittings: March, June & July. So no, I don't think February is too early!

I started in August for my October 6th wedding. Maybe she is anticipating being busy for prom season? If you don’t think your weight will fluctuate you should be fine. I ended up needing 7 fittings because my weight kept dropping every week from stress! If you’re worried about it ask if your final fitting can be closer to your wedding date.

That seems early to me. I am getting married in a week, November 9, and my first fitting was two months ago.

If it is a trusted seamstress, I bet that they probably know better than anyone. A PP mentioned a good point about knowing they'll be busy with prom. My seamstress wanted to get started in October/November for my February wedding which I thought seemed early but she does this every day and I don't!

My D's seamstress wouldn't even schedule an appointment until 6 weeks prior with the final delivery 2 weeks before the wedding. Their reasoning is that you don't want to have issues with weight fluctuations. IMO February is too early.

Agreed. An experienced seamstress also knows all about fabrics and what's easy/difficult to work with. I don't know what your dress looks like, but it's possible if there's a lot of lace and/or beading that she knows even simple alterations could take longer to do and wants to have ample time to do it properly.

My dress just came in and fits like a glove and my wedding is 06/08/2019, I only need a little tuck in the bustier, but because I go to the gym at 3 times a week I'm not worried about gaining weight. So the lady told me to come in during the Feb months only because the bridal stores are very busy during prom months, so keep that in mind as well.

Seems to make sense. I have a very detailed lace and tulle mermaid and I need a decent amount done to it so that’s probably way!
