how does the exit work?

Tracey , on May 4, 2013 at 9:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

So i am curious... FH and I will be the first to exit the ceremony and then BP and guest after us. Where do FH and I go? in pictures and grand exits i always see the B&G walking through seeming like the last people??

OR>> should i just not worry about that and hope for a nice send off after the reception when we hop in my convertible to take off for our honeymoon?

Just curious how all that works?

Probably Depends on your location/venue for the ceremony. Also, are you doing a receiving line? For a typical church wedding I usually see the couple exit , perhaps a receiving line as guests exit the church. Then the guests are handed their bubbles or whatever as they go outside. The B&G then exit the church with the bubbles blowing. Then they go back in and do photos with their bridal party and family. Its kinda a staged moment for the photographs usually. This is just what I have seen done quite a lot not how you HAVE to do it.

It is up to you. In the past, bride and grooms would exit and form a receiving line. Next would be the grand exit when the line is done before going to the reception.

You can do that or go off by yourselves then head to pictures.

Your grand exit can be at the end of your reception. Timing is up to you. And if you have one or not.

We are leaving the chapel in a horse draw carriage so no grand exit after the ceremony for us.

Thanks ladies... ok...... the two of us exiting first and forming a receiving line sounds like a great idea... was thinking of doing the dried lavender buds in little bags for the throwing something at us tradition.. so i guess once all the guests have gone through our receiving line.... they will wait around with the lavender? I hate "staged" stuff..lol... and how to coordinate it all... i mean how will guests know what to do and when?

Some people take their witnesses and go sign the license in the back with the officiant while everyone else exits and gets ready for the send off too. That way you also get a private moment for you two.

Thanks MissB.. i hadn't thought of that Smiley smile So if we want to play the Bridal march song to exit... hmmm I know... how about we exit with the song first.. then circle around to a back door to sign the license? Wait in the ministers office until everyone is lined up outside?

But then again. i don't want any part of it to feel "staged or pretentious"

goodness.. i had no idea that there would be so many things to "overthink"

You know what, it's all staged, who cares! Just have your ushers or someone be responsible for passing out the lavender, and keeping everyone gathered! Part of it is a nice photo opportunity and also so you can take off in your car or whatever. It's sort of expected, everyone will love it!

It wouldn't be staged or pretentious a lot of people do it that way, do it the way you want, the way you have always imagined!!

Ok well do you know what a receiving line is? How many guests do you have? What is your ceremony venue?

I know what a receiving line is.. but not sure how to coordinate one. I will have 100-120 guests. The ceremony venue is a very small country church (attached picture)... the reception will be next door in the fellowship hall. (attached picture)

Usually in a venue that small with that many guests a receiving line will create a bottleneck. I say go in the back and sign your license then come out for your exit.

Makes sense! thank you!! I certainly want to make it a nice comfortable flow for the guests and not have them just waiting and waiting to get outside

Do you think it would be wierd do the the exit with the music and then sneak back in the back door... and come out again? Yeah.. just typing it makes it sound weird.

So how do we exit left of the alter in a special way? (instead of exiting down the isle with music?)

Go down the aisle with the music, sneak back in and then come back out. It is very common and not weird at all!

Maybe, JMO .. Have someone say "hey, they're coming back out .. get ready!" Leave this task to the loud aunt or wild cousin (everybody has one of those) .. not the shy, timid lil' co-worker. That way maybe it won't seem as "staged", like you said.
