How does buying a dress work?

JessicaIsTotallySmithen, on February 17, 2016 at 4:34 PM

I'm assuming that you pay for it all up front, but then I've been told that it's a deposit and then you pay the remainder when the dress comes in. So how does it work? TIA!

We put down 25%, then the rest the day you pick it up.

My dress was $1690. I paid $1000 upfront. I had to pay 60% to order it

I had to leave a 50% deposit when I ordered it. The other 50% is due when I pick it up.

It depends on the shop and the situation/how you buy your dress (custom ordered/off the rack/sample sale/etc/etc). My dress was a sample according to the boutique where I bought it though personally I think it was a cancellation seeing at it was several sizes off from every other sample in the store (closest sample in the store was 4-5 sizes bigger and it doesn't make sense to me that they would have had one single random sample so far off in size from the others plus it was the only one being sold). Point being that my dress was already there in the store when I bought it instead of needing to be ordered and made. Because of this they required us to pay in full or the dress would have stayed on the sales floor and could have been bought by someone else. If we had ordered on the other hand we could have paid part when we ordered and part later.

I paid 50% when I ordered the dress, and I'll pay the remaining 50% plus the alterations fee when it arrives and I go for my first fitting.

    ETA: spelling

I think every shop is different. In order to purchase my dress I had to put 50% down. The rest can be paid anytime before or on the day I pick it up.

I got mine from a sample sale and paid in full and took it home with me that day.

I'm not sure if all sample sales work that way.

I'm going this weekend. The shop requires 55% down. My budget is $5000, so that's at least $2750 down. They're having 2 trunk shows, one was extended.

My salon had me pay in full to order. Though I'm sure if I pressed them, I could've done a payment plan or something. It just wasn't a concern of ours and we had the money to pay then and there. Ask in advance and if you forget, bring it up before handing over any money.

I'm sure it probably depends on the shop, but at the one I went to, we had to pay half up front to order it, then the other half by 30 days after it comes in

You have options, many more in the past. You may go to a bridal store, but there are also options for dress consignment shops offering dresses that have never been worn. FB has for sale sites for brides to be also selling dresses that have never been worn and finally internet sales. It is totally what ever direction that you would like to take, each having its advantages and disadvantages.

It depends on how much and where you are shopping. Obviously online requires a full payment. The boutique that I went to way 75% of the total cost to order it and the dress must be paid in full to take it home. Hope this helps

I paid for mine in full up front. One budgeting note: make sure your budget includes tax! That'll depend on where you buy the dress - so if you live in a state with high tax it might be worth it to buy in a neighboring state. (IE, instead of buying in DC, I bought in Maryland, which has a lower tax rate).

I got the sample dress, b/c mine fit me so well except the straps needed alterations & bit of hemming. I paid for it all at once of if I didn't have all of it then I would've paid for half of it. There was no deposit to put down

It definitely depends on the store, when I went, I paid off the dress in full and they gave me a discount for doing so, it definitely helped! Maybe you can ask around where you are going to go for dress shopping!
