How do you handle checks given at your wedding?

We get married in 2 weeks and most guests have said that they plan to write us checks as gifts. Here's my question. We get married in 2 weeks and most guests have said that they plan to write us checks as gifts. Here's my question. If we leave for our honeymoon the very next day and will be gone for about 10 days, will guests get upset about their checks just hanging out there for that long? Should we plan to deposit them before leaving? I hate it when my checks are left out there for too long (whenever I do write one) and I don't want to look like we needed that $$ for the honeymoon. What's the norm?

We'll definitely be doing a deposit before our honeymoon.

And to deposit checks made out to your new name it's super simple, sign as your maiden name then sign again as your married name

We had this issue and didn't deposit them until after we returned home which was over a week later. I had several that were made out to mr and mrs his name, and I didn't change my name. So we had to go in person and ask what to do about that. I had to sign my name, and also the 'married name' even though it wasn't actually my name. I felt bad keeping people waiting because I know I hate when people don't deposit my checks right away, but we needed to go in person to get it sorted out. I would say use the mobile app if you can or go as soon as you can and most people will understand!

You wouldn't look like you needed the money for the honeymoon if you deposit it right away. Clearly, you already paid for the honeymoon and honestly, it wouldn't bother me as a guest either way.

I would deposit for leaving and open a joint account now. Then they can be deposited if it is Mr &Mrs. only 1 name needs to be on the check and the account.

With 30 years banking experience, here's what "most" financial institutions will do:

    1. If it's made out to "Mr & Mrs His LastName" - both of you are required to endorse the back of the check. If you didn't take his name, you should endorse it "Mrs LastName" followed by "Miss RealName". Once endorsed, it can be deposited in to a joint account or either of your separate accounts.

    2. If it's made out to "Mr OR Mrs HisLastName" - either one of you can endorse the check and deposit in to any account that either one (or both) of you own. If you didn't take his name, you can follow the procedures as in #1 above.

    3. ALL checks should be first endorsed as "For Deposit Only" regardless of how you deposit them (in person, ATM, Mobile).

    4. As a PP indicated, your FI's mobile app may have a daily dollar limit for deposits, so depending on amount, you may not be able to deposit all at once.

    5. If you are depositing in person and you are endorsing the check but don't have an ID in your new last name, bring your marriage license/certificate with you, it will help.

All of that said, most tellers these days don't make a big stink about watching for 2 endorsements on personal checks (if the check is made payable to "AND") - but they will for insurance checks and mortgage escrow checks.

If you deposit everything after you get back from your HM (as you said, about 10 days/2 weeks after the wedding) - no one should have a big stink about it.

Many banks have night deposit boxes. Some ATMs even accept checks.

I had the same thought! My mom is going to keep them and take them to the bank to be deposited for us. As long as she has my bank acct # and it's all being deposited someone else can do it.

We had no issues with the names on the checks. In fact I went into the bank and rather than signing them all they stamped each one for deposit only. It wasn't an issue. As far as cashing the checks... we received some checks about three weeks before. We did not cash them till after the wedding. I think it's ok to either cash before or after you get back. 10 days is not long to wait for someone who wrote out a check as a wedding gift.

Just as an FYI, I know that PNC bank has a maximum mobile deposit limit of $5000 per month. I'm not sure how other banks have it set up. I plan to just take most if not all of ours to the bank and have then walk through the process with us.

I'd say go and relax on your honeymoon if you can't go to the bank. It's not like your leaving for a month to tour Europe. Or are you Smiley winking

We deposited them all when we got back from the honeymoon - I brought them into the bank. Our mobile banking app only allows you to deposit up to like $2,500 at a time.

I don't think it would be a problem depositing the checks after your honeymoon. Your friends and family will understand. As far as reposting the checks, if it's a bank that you've had an account with for a while, I don't see there being an issue reposting a check to Mr and Mrs Lastname. Or husband could just deposit in his account.

Yes, I left out "for deposit only" by mistake, though that should be a given. You should also endorse any checks going to the mobile app that way also.

I have been in situations where there was issues depositing money into an account without someones name on it. Its a setup we have and it makes sense for us. I utilize it when needed.

Do you not have Mobile deposit? Deposit them on your phone day after the wedding. Boom done. If your bank doesn't have it. YIKES

A lot of banks limit the total amount that can be deposited per day using mobile deposit. However, if that's an issue, you can always just mail in deposits. Just have the stamped envelope and deposit slip ready to go before the wedding, and it will only take a few minutes.

@Wanda thank you for all that advice! I was wondering what to do in the event we receive checks because my FH is Japanese and doesn't have a US acct. also we are getting married in a city that does not have a branch of my bank, so my parents would have to do a physical deposit of checks for me after they return home because we are flying back to Japan 3 days after the wedding. The gifts that we got for engagement were either cash or visa gift cards, so hopefully people will think to go that route vs writing a check.
