How do we word invitations when we first marry civilly due to pandemic?

Leara, on August 25, 2020 at 2:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Any advice on how my invitations should be worded? My husband and I married early with a notary, due to this pandemic and not knowing when things would re-open. We had to reschedule from our June, 2020 date to October 2020, and then again from October to 2021. We now have it set for 5/8/2021 which will be our 1 year anniversary date of the civil union. We both want our ceremony and reception as we initially planned, because we want our vows to reflect our christian beliefs and promises to God. Our civil union was nothing but a notary stamping our license after we signed. So, you can understand my confusion as to wording the save the dates, and invitations. Do we call it a Wedding/Reception Ceremony? Also, My last name is already legally changed to include his as well. PLEASE HELP!!!

Because you are already legally married, the next celebration would be a renewal of vows. The wedding already occurred privately.

Your save the dates and invites would say "Please join in celebration with YourName and HisName as they renew their marriage vows on Date at Time at Venue. Dinner reception to follow"

Thank you for your reply! Would it be appropriate to say that we are requesting their presence as we renew our vows under God and before friends and family?

You would call it a vow renewal or a celebration of marriage.

Call it you're wedding. You were cheated out of a real wedding. You said it right the first time, you filed papers with the clerk of the court (likely for taxes and insurance). Even if you said vows, it doesn’t feel like a wedding if you were always planning on the do over.

I’m in the exact same situation. I’m legally married and today I had to reschedule my wedding AGAIN. I am not calling it a vow renewal.

I will be honest- I understand calling it a vowel renewal but we didn’t say any vows to renew. I will most likely send out wedding invitations and if people want to question the wording, that’s on them. We are still having a pastor, and treating it as the first time bc it is. Our marriage was done this way was bc of this virus and him needing my insurance due to being high risk. Thankfully we did it bc 2 weeks later he was in the Covid ICU ward.

    EXACTLY.
Some people on these forums get very uppety about terminology and not calling it your wedding if you’re legally married beforehand. With COVID and minimonies and courthouse weddings being a thing now, people need to not get their panties in a bunch if they are invited to the “weddings” of people who got married at the courthouse for insurance reasons. They obviously had to postpone for COVID so chill.

We are calling it a "wedding celebration".
