Definitely be honest that you want an intimate ceremony first and vow renewal later!

Cher’s right. Your friends and family just want you to be happy. You should be upfront and honest about your choice. You don’t want to hide such an amazing moment in your life.

We did something kind of similar but with less time in between, we were just honest with everyone. She was concerned that people would be upset that they were being invited to a handfasting and celebration vs the actual wedding, but everyone has been super supportive and understanding.

It's a very old tradition of binding the couple's hands together with a cord or ribbon. It signifies their bond as a couple as well as the trust they put in each other's hands. The knots tied bind the vows spoken. It is our way of creating a ceremony for our friends and family that won't be at the private wedding that will legally bind us.

Just be honest with people. If they are true friends they will be fine and just want you to be happy.
