How do i let vendor know we aren’t happy with them?

Yesterdaysbride, on September 17, 2019 at 2:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16
Y’all! I hired a photographer that my coworker used for her wedding and he took the most amazing pictures of her for engagement shoot and wedding. We hired him because of budget and because the quality of the pictures he took for my coworker.

However we had our engagement shoot with him a couple of weeks ago and the pictures are terrible! Horrible poses, he didn’t use a reflector for the sun lighting, he didn’t edit them and he also didn’t give me direction for posing after I asked him to please direct me a lot since I’m not photogenic. I can’t even use these pictures and now I’m terrified I’ll end up with the same for my wedding day! He’s providing us with photo, video and DJ.

My bridesmaid owns her own photography business and when she saw these pictures she was mortified and offered to do photography only for 600 as a favor to me. So now how do I tell this vendor I no longer need his photography services but still need DJ and video?! I’m nervous he might get upset and not provide video and DJ and I’m stuck trying to find someone 46 days away from my special day!

Any advice at all? Help!!

I would just make this about your bridesmaid and not about how bad his work was. Tell him that you really appreciate the engagement session, but that your bridesmaid offered to do the photos for you and that it would mean a lot (given that she's a friend/relative). I'm sure he'd be more than happy to continue with the DJ and video services.

Do you have a contract? If so, I wouldn't expect to get your deposit back. Just let him know that you don't think that his style aligns with your vision, but you'd love to keep him for your video and DJ services.

I agree with Amber. Hopefully he doesn't back out to provide his other services but in the case he does, I hear Thumbtack and Bark are Godsend websites to find people who offer all kinds of services as well. So if that ends up happening (knock on wood), I would hop right on those sites to find someone. I wish you the best of luck!

With your wedding being so soon, I’d go over your contract very carefully. We owed all our balances in full with vendors if we cancelled less than 60 days out from the event.

He won't withdraw the other services. It's money to him. If he is a good businessman he may even offer you a new engagement shoot. Custom reviews and recommendations are what his business depends upon.

My wedding planner reviewed our contract with him and it doesn’t state that there are fees for canceling or anything. We won’t get the deposit back but I’m not worried about the deposit if we can apply it to video and DJ.

I would just email him and be honest but polite. Tell him you're happy you got the photos back, but the lack of editing and awkward poses aren't ideal so you aren't going to move forward with him for photography but would like to move forward with DJ and video.

I would definitely review the contract you have with him before doing anything. I'm assuming since your bridesmaid owns her own business that she has other people that work for her otherwise how would she take photos and be in your wedding. If you aren't happy with his photos, I would be concerned about his work as a DJ and videographer. My suggestion is to do some research and see if any other DJs or videographers in your price range are available because he could back out and/or you might not be happy with his work. I am sorry you are going through this. I had problems with my florist leading up to my wedding and I wanted to fire her, but my husband was worried we wouldn't find a new one in our price range so needless to say we didn't fire her and I wish I had because she didn't listen to half the things I wanted.

I would straight up tell him that you weren't happy with the engagement photos and that you guys decided to go with someone else

How is your bridesmaid going to do your pictures and be a photographer? If it’s an employee do you know that you like their style too? I’m only saying because it could be very awkward and disappointing if this person is like the first one you hired.
No matter what I’m sorry you’re going through this and hope you have a resolution quickly.

It’s her employee who has shot for us before and we have been happy with her work and editing. She might be a bit too flashy like she likes to go big or go home lol but never has disappointed. We originally didn’t go with her company because she quoted us 5,000. Now that she saw what I’m dealing with she just knocked it allll the way down to help us out.

That's crazy that your bridesmaid would give you such a high quote originally but I'm glad she had changed her mind. Like I said, in my previous post I would read over the contract if you have one with your original photographer.

If it was me I would be worried about the video and DJ quality of it’s all coming from the same vendor. I would try to contract all new vendors, but that’s just my take on it.

Just say it. He’s a businessman or works for one and you are paying for a service. Don’t beat around the bush it never helps but definitely say something
