I've read in articles that a tip for saving money while ordering your wedding cake is not saying the word "wedding". I want a simple three tier cream covered cake, my florist will be applying fresh flowers to my cake. I asked a bakery out of curiosity how much they charge and they replied with $350 which would only feed 70! I have 200 guests. I have a solution to that problem which would be getting sheet cake and having servers pass that out once cake runs out. However, my problem is how do I go about ordering my cake and having it delivered to my venue without saying its a wedding cake? Help. Please

Ask for kitchen cakes! Many bakeries will make a small tiered cake for pictures and display and then make sheet cakes of the same cake. These are then cut in the kitchen and passed out. No one will notice if they aren’t from the original cake itself!

I know this is very old but maybe I can help someone else who comes across this thread. The moment you say wedding, the price does go up. It goes from $4-5 a slice/person to a $9-12 a slice. This can be costly especially for a bigger wedding. What I suggest are two options but you may not get the fancy cake you really want but it depends on how much you want to save hundreds of dollars! It also depends on how creative you want to be on your wedding day. If you have a helper who doesn't mind wanting to do these things, then go for it.

You can ask for 3 separate cakes each of a different size and assemble them yourself. However you'll need to watch a YouTube video on how to do this as you'll want to support the cake in the middle of the stacks. You can either assemble it before and pray it won't slide on the way to your reception, not recommended, (but sometimes you have to do what you have to do), or assemble it when you get there which is a much better plan. Please don't just plop one cake on top of the other as it will sink in over time.

If your wedding is smaller, like half the size of yours say 75 people, you can buy a 16" and a 14" cake, and stack them. Or, you can use a taller cake stand and a shorter cake stand and place them side by side. This can look really pretty if done right.

A large part of the charge comes decorating the cake. I know all those lovely flowers look great but it adds to your cost. So pick up the separate cakes and place fresh flowers on it. This looks really nice.

Lastly, most bakeries will make you a sheet cake a few hundred dollars cheaper than a tiered cake which is a great option for a larger wedding. You can also buy a smaller tiered cake, or even a fake one which is weird but people do it, for the table and have the sheet cake in slices. People understand and honestly don't really care because hey, they aren't paying for it and it's free yummy cake!

I have done pricing with many different options and you save so much money not asking for a wedding cake. Nobody cares about how your cake really looks except for you and if you have tons of money by all means get the most beautiful cake you can afford because you deserve the very best but if you're on a budget, why not be creative? Remember, you're only going to eat a piece or two of this cake. Is it really worth all the money? Your guests will care however, how the cake tastes though so pick a bakery whose cakes you absolutely love. You may even be able to choose a better bakery with amazing cake flavors over a so-so bakery with blah flavors that fits into your budget.

Of course there's always the option of making your own which will give you tremendous pride. However, only do this if you're a very good baker and have done it many times before because under the stress of your wedding day approaching, something will always go wrong. Even things you've done so many times before. The cake will sink in the middle, the icing is the wrong consistency, you can't ice it nicely, etc. Also, do this a day or two before. You can keep it in the fridge in separate layers and it will still taste great on your wedding day. Good luck!
