How difficult is it to hem a dress?

So my wedding dress needs hemmed, I was planning on going back to Davids Bridal where I bought it (and still might) and I was surprised to get a quote of $200 for just hemming.. I've read the average is $25-$100 so it seems steep. A friend of mine, not a professional has offered to do it - should I...

I know nothing about alterations, so I'm like.. okay, is this something that if they make a small mistake could look like crap or is it a fairly simple thing where mistakes can be easily covered? Would of course rather pay the money for it to look great but wasn't sure if a hem was worth having a professional do it.

I hem my own jeans and that in itself is a bitch sometimes. Wedding dresses are so much more expensive and more intricate. Shop around for a professional. If it were me I wouldn't trust myself to hem my own wedding dress.

I would still use a pro, but you can definitely seek other professionals besides DB! check out what's available in your area in terms of a private seamstress, but I would definitely make sure that whoever does it has experience with wedding dress alterations. It's a lovely dress! I expected to spend at least in the $400+ range for any alterations in the Chicago area.

Find a local seamstress who has good reviews. DB has wanted to gouge me every time I have been a bridesmaid. I had a dress that just needed to go in a little and they quoted me $200 when the dress only cost me $80. Local seamstress did it for $25. Took her 40 mins, I sat in the shop while she did it.
