How did you pick a Dj?

Mac, on October 27, 2020 at 12:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

How did you guys evaluate DJ's? This is the only part of planning that I'm completely at a loss for. I haven't been to another wedding in the town that we're having ours in, so I just feel like I have no idea where to start. So what did you guys look for in a DJ? What was essential, what would you ask about in hindsight, etc?

Besides pricing and what items were offered in the package, my fiance and I also chose our DJ based on personality. He's easy to work with, usually responds quickly to emails/texts, reliable, organized, and has a good amount of experience with weddings.

Look for energy, positive attitude, and reliability in the DJ's personality when you meet with potential vendors! Obviously also consider pricing and packages (do they include dance floor lighting? How many hours do they cover? Do they do both the ceremony and reception? How about cocktail hour? How do they choose what music to play? What styles of music do they typically prefer to play? Etc), but once you narrow it down to a few options, pick someone who you feel you'd like to work with.

Also, here is a list of questions you could ask in addition to the other ones I suggested: https://www.theknot.com/content/amphtml/wedding-reception-music-questions-to-ask-a-band

And one more thing (sorry, kept remembering things I wanted to add): check out Wedding Wire's Vendor tab to find DJs in your area if you're having trouble finding options! Good luck!

Does your venue have a preferred list of vendors? Our venue had an open house with all vendors that they prefer and we picked by that.

Many djs have online clips of them in action on YouTube.
Ask what they offer. Do they let you customize a package? Are they receptive to your unique requests/concerns? What type of music do they play? Are they constantly talking at the reception or do they just play music based on crowd appeal? Do you click with them while you're interviewing?

Browse clips, read reviews and set up an interview to go from there.

My FH and I were originally looking for a bilingual English-and Spanish-speaking DJ to accommodate guests who only speak Spanish, but the ones we liked were pretty far out of our budget and were going to cost about $2,000. We ended up going with a barebones DJ service with a super friendly guy who has a lot of experience DJing weddings at our venue, and charges half of what most DJs I've seen in the Chicago area charge. He's not bilingual, but is letting us essentially build our own playlist, so we'll be able to play all the Spanish music we want and he'll add any he doesn't have to his music library, which will be great.

So...price was #1 for me, then flexibility in terms of playing the type of music we want. I'd also definitely recommend talking in person or via video call to any potential DJs, too. I talked to three before finally booking. FH and I had a pretty stiff, awkward conversation with one of them, whereas we vibed well with the other two.

We had a live band and not a DJ, but we picked them based on a few factors: recommendations from other couples, recommendations from our venue coordinator, and by viewing video clips and demos of them playing at other weddings. I would definitely start by watching videos, if you don't personally know anybody else who has used the DJs in question

I completely understand, I hired my cousin. lol I haven't heard him DJ, I don't even know if he's done a wedding before. I didn't even ask but I love to support family and friends when I can so I'm giving him a chance. I know he done some college parties which is ok with me since we are young so he will more than likely have a good mix that we will like. My only concern is our ceremony, cause I will have him play the ceremony music as well. I just made sure I was extra detailed in which songs I wanted, how long to play them and when/what time to play them. lol He's been very responsive and said he will follow my list... cross fingers things go well

I found my DJ through The Knot and we met at a local coffee shop to just talk over things and see if he could do what we wanted. We immediately clicked. We both loved his personality and his ideas and that was that. We actually loved him so much, we booked his wife as our photographer too. Personality is everything with your DJ because they’re essentially running your night and you want them to be able to accomplish what you want out of your day. Most places will recommend going to see them perform as well if that’s possible, so you could always do that.

We "stole" our DJ from friends who had used her when they got married. We'd had such a great time at their wedding, and noticed the song selection was really great, as well as the decibel levels, so we socked that info away.

in other words - start looking for recs from people. Even if you don't live in the town, you can probably find reviews... or a DJ someone recommends who is willing to travel.
