How did you get your wedding dress to a destination wedding?

I live in Utah and my wedding is in NY. I have been told multiple things about how to get my dress there. Just wondering what everyone else did. I dont have a ball gown and I was told it's a very forgiving fabric.

My bf had her wedding in the DR we are in Jersey. When she got on the plane the flight attendant hung it up for her in their closet. Perhaps that would be an option for you? You could call the airline and find out, that is what she did.

I'm from NY and getting married in Co. I'm planning on just carrying it on the plane with me. I thought about shipping it, with all the other stuff I'm shipping but I'm too nervous about it. I'm told that airlines are usually pretty accommodating to brides with their dresses. The shop I purchased my dress from also said I could call the airline a few weeks before and ask if they have a captain's closet to hang my dress. Good luck with yours!

We are having the ceremony in Vegas. I paid for carry on space specifically for the dress. From what I've read online the airline we are using doesn't have closets we can use but will place it on top of carry on luggage overhead as long as a carry on is paid for. It all depends on the airline but most are quite accommodating.

I flew with a ballgown. Many tears trying to get the dress from PA to PR. But I did it! You have multiple options since the dress isn't a ballgown. THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS THAT YOU NEVER CHECK YOUR DRESS. KEEP YOUR DRESS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES!

So a garment bag may work for you. It didn't for me because the volume of my dress was too big for an approved carry on garment bag. I ended up folding my dress in a vacuum sealed bag so it would fit in a carry on bag with just the dress. I won't go into more details since you don't have a ballgown but if you don't do a garment bag and fold your dress in a bag there are some tips.

    1. put your dress inside out.

    2. spread the dress out and fold the bottom wide parts in (assuming your dress is at least A line or triangle shaped). Then fold it delicately. Put it in a plastic bag that seals. If it doesn't seal, use more than one bag.

    3. Put in roller suit case. A hardcover suitcase is recommended so it's not squished and nothing from outside leaks in. I didn't have a hardcover suitcase so I used the normal fabric kind. Nothing spilled, but my vacuum sealed bag protected it.

The dress survived and looked gorgeous the day of. On the way back, I was able to pack it in 10 minutes.

Still, garment bag probably makes more sense. Just play close attention to the size requirements. You don't want to risk a strict flight attendant checking your dress. Play by the rules!

The designer i purchased my dress from will be shipping it UPS certified next day air to my parents' home. The extra bonus is I did not have to pay Chicago's 10.25% sales tax on it, which was much more than the cost of next day air.

She will be shipping it 2.5 weeks before the wedding in case anything happens to it. Then, at the very least, we could come up with a new plan (but she said this has never happened in her 15 years as a dressmaker).

What airline are you taking that allowed you to pay to guarantee?
