How did you find your seamstress?

Laura, on June 23, 2019 at 5:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
I have about 6 weeks until I need to start the alterations process. I have NO idea how to find a seamstress. My friends are all long married and no good for referrals. Nobody I know, knows a seamstress. Do I just hit Yelp, go with good reviews and cross my fingers? That seems so risky for something so important.

Find a bridal boutique that can refer you. Wedding dresses are way different than other types of dresses. I'm using a referral from my boutique.

I got my dress at David’s Bridal, so...yeah, not asking them. They’ll just try to get me to go with them. And I’ve heard too many horror stories about them.
If I go into a bridal shop where I have no intention of buying anything, why should they help me?

Hi I just looked through yelp, thumbtack and reddit. Then start calling to make appointments for them to give you quotes.

Daughter's alterations were done by her bridal salon (not David's), but she needed to have her dress steamed separate from the alterations. She used Yelp to find an excellent dry cleaner (that also did alterations if she had needed them).

So Yelp has a total of two shops locally. With less than great reviews. If I want to drive to Tampa or Orlando I have plenty of options but both are a drive. Ugh. Have to keep searching.

I called around to different bridal boutiques and asked if the would do alterations on a dress not bought through them. I found a few that said yes and went with the store with the best reviews. Most bridal boutiques have an in house seamstress or an associated alterations shop.

Ask people at work. I found mine through a friend but before that a few people at work had recommendations of people they used for non wedding alterations such as prom dresses for their kids.

Fwbride, that’s a good idea. I may do that.

Ana, I work from home and am the only one who lives in my county. So I could get recommendations from co-workers but they’d be 30-50 miles away, not ideal.

You could reach out on Facebook for a recommendation. Or try Thumbtack. I've heard that lots of local (but not so high end) vendors advertise there. Also, I think you can use the vendor search here on Wedding Wire to search for seamstresses.

And it’s Thumbtack for the win! I have an appointment at the end of July (still a touch early for my wedding but I’m anxious about figuring out the sew in cups or whatever we’re gonna do up top) and figured I may need a little extra time. Many reviews, all 5 stars, and just the next town over. Couldn’t have asked for more.

o that’s that, hopefully. Now to figure out the cup situation. Can you do sew in cups as a 36G? I mean, would they hold me up?
