How cheap is too cheap...

Jordan, on May 20, 2017 at 1:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I will be selecting a wine to serve at my wedding this week. How much is everyone spending on wine? I want to keep cost as low as possible but avoid serving my guests something subpar.

Aldis has good wine and it's cheap! Love their winking owl Pinot Grigio!

I have friends that are wine sales rep so not good explain that's going cheap but a place like trader Joe or a wine barn can get you cases and cases of wine for low price but great taste

I had Barefoot Wine for my wedding. Used Mascoto for my signature drink. Had a red and white. Also, had Keg of beer

We're having Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel, and Syrah that we purchased from a local winery/family friends - can't really complain about living in wine country!

Is this for the bar or is this table wine for during dinner?

Thanks all! Yes we plan to have more than one kind of wine and we will also have beer. All alcohol will be at our open bar for the duration of the night. One salesperson from Trader Joe's recommended starting the night with better wines and then transitioning to their house wine (Charles Shaw) which is $2/bottle. I think that makes me too nervous though - I don't want to be tacky!

The bar at are venue does not carry a high grade wine. It is just house white or red. We are going to a wine tasting event at a place where you can make your own wines and maybe do a custom wine for the wedding.

We bought our wine from Whole Foods for $3 a bottle. I heard no complaints.

I would taste before you buy. Our venue has pre-selected wines that they offer, so we didn't really have to pay attention to that. I've never had the $3 whole food wine, but Mrs Knollie do you really think your guests would be rude enough to tell you that your wine was bad? I wouldn't want to serve guests anything I wouldn't want to drink, so taste away!

@mrsg I think I'm a little afraid that I won't know if it's bad. I'm not a big wine drinker haha. And my fiancé doesn't like wine so he won't be able to offer input at all. I will taste anyway and see what I come up with!

If neither of you drink wine I'd suggest finding a friend or family member who is knowledgeable. I've had good $5 wines and I've had shitty $30 wines. You just need to pick a decent one. Yellow Tail is one I've seen a lot at Weddings.

Well, our friend who is a wine lover and knowledgeable about wine told us it was good and all the wine that we bought was gone at the end of the night. That was good enough for me.

As someone who is in the wine business I will tell you not to "cheap out". You do not have to spend a lot, but don't do $2-3 bottles. Truly, you do not want to know how that stuff s produced.

You can easily get some nice wines in the $7-10 per bottle range. Look at wines from Argentina, Chile...even some regions on Italy and France.

Ask a local wine merchant for suggestions. You do not have to have a lot of different wines....one white and one red will do. But make them decent.

There is a pretty decent, inexpensive brand, called Leese Fitch. It is out of California. Retail is around $7-8 bottle. They make a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot.
