How big is your cake, and how many does it serve?

moo, on July 16, 2015 at 10:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

Another post got me wondering about this. My cake will be round with 3 tiers. 8", 12", & 16", and the baker told us it will serve 130 people. I am expecting around 125 people, including myself and FH. What size was/is your cake, and how many servings did your baker tell you it would be? How many guests did you/will you have?

I can't remember the tier sizes, but we had 4 tiers and a half sheet cake in the back to feed 220 guests and didn't have one piece left over. I think I overshot the head count and told her 230 servings.

Wow! @maltese Did you save the top tier, or did they eat that, too?

We never wanted to save the top tier...having something like that in my freezer for a year would drive me nuts! And the people I've known that have done it said it tasted awful...our cake baker gave up a gift certificate for a small cake on our anniversary and I'll just do that

We're have a 5 tier cake for 150 people. We are saving the top tier for our first anniversary. My cake might be a little bit bigger than the norm though because my cake is a gift from a mutual baker friend. Here's a guide to how many tiers you need for the amount of servings you need.

We left on our honeymoon the day after the wedding, so having left over cake wasn't an option for us, although I wish it was now.

Our cake serves 180 and its a 4 round tier cake...Each tier is 6" high. The cake on display is fake though. Only a small part is real, the part we're cutting into.

    Edit: The tiers are 16" 13" 10" 7"

We invited 150 guests. Our baker said to avoid extra cake, subtract like 20% and that is how much your cake should serve. We have a 4 tier cake- our tiers are 12", 10", 8" and 6". The top tier is our "anniversary" tier and we'll be saving it. The cake serves 120 guests when reserving the top tier, and we have 131 people invited. If we want to serve the top tier, the cake will serve 130.
