Hour and a half cocktail hour?

Carrie, on May 7, 2014 at 12:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Hi all,

Our photographers recommend having 1.5hrs for photos after the ceremony. We are having an open bar and passed hors d' oeuvres for cocktail hour. The wedding is taking place in Northern Ontario at a small resort in cottage country where everyone will be staying (most people are going up for the whole weekend).

Would you find a 1.5hr cocktail hour too long?

Like Erin said, I wouldn't go much longer than that. We're doing something similar and having our DJ do trivia or something like that to keep the guests entertained.

Can you do pictures before hand? We are not doing a 1st look, but we are all getting to the venue early so the guys can do all their group pics and I can do all my group pics / family pics before hand, so that way during cocktail hour, we can focus on pics of me and FH ... we also have 2 photographers so hopefully it all goes quick.

I'd consider it too long. I think an hour tops is best. Can you do some of the pictures before the ceremony? We're taking all the pictures we can before the ceremony--no first look, so everything with FH and me will be after. We're expecting about 45 minutes to an hour for our photos during cocktail hour.

It would be ok, especially if there's some activities for guests to do (guest book, photo booth, slideshow ...).

Our timeline gives us 1.5 hours for photos. We will have drinks so I think the guests will be happy. I think the same will be true of your guests. If you keep them busy, the time will fly.

I think since you are providing drinks and appetizers you should be ok, but I think that you should try to have some stuff going on like some of the other posters suggested like music and maybe a photo booth to keep people busy

Personally I think that is a little long. I wouldn't complain necessarily, but I would be checking my watch a lot.

Most are an hour. Occasionally if the ceremony space has to be converted to dining space, it can take 2 hours. If you do go for longer than an hour, just make sure your caterer knows. A few years ago, we did a reception for someone at their location. During the walk through, we saw all the spaces they were going to use. On the day of, something changed and we had to turn the space over from ceremony chair set up to full tables. Had they informed us of that, we would have done a few things differently. More staff for moving tables and chairs. More food since it was going to take 2 hours. It really stinks when you have multiple conversations, get a time line, do a walk through and find things drastically changed but no one thought about letting you know.

I think that is fine - I don't even remember how long cocktail hours have been to weddings I've gone to since I am yapping and drinking away.

I think that is completely fine. I'm doing the exact same thing - having a 1.5 hour cocktail hour while we do pictures. The guests will be provided with drinks and hors d'oeuvres as well. I don't see how people wouldn't enjoy that for an hour and a half.
