Hotel—bad reviews

Melissa, on October 24, 2019 at 5:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
I’m in my search for wedding venues. I came across a beautiful hotel that had everything I wanted. But I started to look at some reviews on the hotel itself and majority of the people commented on how the hotel hosts a brunch pool party every Saturday open to the general public from 10-5pm and it turns into a drunken frat party vibe. Guests complain they can’t find any seats by the pool and it is not very family friendly. My ceremony would be at like 5-5:30ish and it is very close to the pool. I am so confused if I should even consider this venue anymore. What are your thoughts?

Did you ask the venue about it? It may be something where if they are having a big event, they don't have the brunch that weekend or they end it early. It might not be an issue. If the brunch still happens, I know you say you are close to the pool, but is it still a separate room or would you be out there with the pool party? I wouldn't want to be in an open space with the pool party, but I wouldn't have a problem if I was going to be in a different room and we wouldn't be bothered.

Have you checked the reviews of the hotel as a wedding venue? Check wedding wire, the knot, or Google reviews and see if anyone had any complaints for the same area you are getting married.

Even though the pool party ends at 5pm, I'd be worried for anyone staying at the pool to continue the party and have my ceremony distracted by noise. Maybe go there one Saturday near the end of the party and see how bad the noise is from the ceremony location (assuming there's not an event going on lol)

Can you go on a Saturday & see the pool party for yourself? Would they have the pool party in Dec?

With your wedding being in December, I'm guessing that probably don't have a pool party then so it might not be a problem. I would definitely ask them if they still has the party during that time of year. If so, I would be very hesitant to have my wedding there.

I emailed the venue about it and they said they would end the pool party at 4, but that still makes me nervous! And yes, our ceremony is outside on the lawn. I have checked wedding wire and the knot and there’s only like 3-4 reviews. None of them mention it but the brunch event might not have been a thing when they had their wedding. The hotel is fairly new. I’m going to try to go this weekend to see!

The wedding is in south Florida so December is still very much warm weather so I don’t know if they would not have it during that time. I am going to try to see if they would negotiate with me to have that event cancelled that day if they want my business.

It may depend on how much money the pool party brings in.

If they say they end at 4 then it should be okay. I'd also ask if the pool is closed while you have your ceremony so randoms aren't walking around during your vows lol If it makes you nervous though you could always find another venue.

I would definitely do your research before considering them. Some bad reviews can be false but often they have real backing to them. You would not want to be stressed about this the big day!

Yeah that’s the thing...it wasn’t just a few random reviews, there was A LOT of them. I agree though, I’m gonna keep doing my research and try to go this weekend to see what this party looks like. But I just wanted to see what you guys thought! Thanks for the advice/thoughts!

I would also look at what time of year the reviews were written. If the majority were in the summer or during spring break, I would feel better about it not being an issue.
