Hotel Room Blocks

Megan, on August 14, 2019 at 1:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 19
Hi everyone!
I'm trying to reserve blocks of rooms for my wedding next June. Every place I have contacted will only give me 10 rooms. Is this a common thing? If so how did you all deal with that? We are inviting 150 people (not all will show up) but 10 rooms is basically just my bridal party. We were planning on going with 2 hotels, one that's really nice and it's close or one that is slightly farther away but more reasonably priced.
I'm not sure what to do and dont really know what I should be expecting ha! Any advice or recommendations?

Usually they’ll expand your room block after the 10 fill up. I would also contact some more hotels and see what their policy is.

We used Marriott and started with a 15 room complimentary block. They were great & worked with us, so if the 15 room block filled up they would add more rooms (5 at a time) at no obligation to us if they were still available in the hotel. We just had to have all rooms booked 1 month out in the block. I'd reach out to hotels & see if they will do that. We needed a large block but didn't want to be financially responsible!

Most will only block 10-15 rooms at a time. Once those 10 rooms are filled they will open an additional 10 at a time with your contracted rate, typically up to a certain date before your wedding. I know ours is 2 weeks but anything after that they will accommodate as long as the hotel isn't booked up.

You can also look into Airbnb's if it's a choice for you. Fiance and his groomsmen booked an entire house, really nice house with like 6 bedrooms, pool and other amenities where they each would be staying with thier wives and kids. Cost like 250/night and they are splitting the cost amongst themselves. So each person is paying about $41/night.

We just got 10 complimentary rooms as well but can add on if the block fills up. If there's a SpringHill Suites near your venue, I recommend them! All of their rooms are suites with a pull-out couch so their 2 Queen Suites sleep 6 people. Our guests that are coming as families (or friends/couples that decided to get the same room) have liked this because it's cheaper for them to split!

We blocked 3 separate hotels since we have a destination wedding and have practically NO guests living in that area, We blocked out a year and half in advance, blocked 25 rooms (all different types/sizes) in each hotel. If we fill up, they'll accommodate the extra pricing to any additional rooms up to a certain date to the wedding.

I think it’s pretty standard that they block 10 to 15 rooms but as you fill those they typically will give you more as long as there is availability. I would encourage your gas to book as early as possible so that you can continue to get rooms at a good rate while they last

The hotel I'm having my wedding and reception at gave me 25 blocked rooms. So it really just depends on the venue.

We’re blocking at 2 hotels. One would give us 10, the other 12.

We have a block at the Sheraton. They reserve us ten rooms free of charge, and if they fill up more will be added. If we had them reserve more then that, we would be financially accountable for any rooms not booked. For example, if I reserved 15 but only 8 were booked, I would have to pay for the seven rooms not used. Our wedding is at the Sheraton, but we’re going down to Key West, so there are a lot of close options of where people can stay.

We are having our wedding at a hotel, and they will only a block off 10 rooms for us as well. They said if we fill those 10 rooms quickly, they will block off another 10. I think this is standard because they do not want to risk losing revenue on blocked rooms that never get filled. We are just suggesting to our guests that they book their rooms ASAP if they think they’re going to go - they can always cancel if they decide not to.

10 room is pretty customary here in Nashville.

What I've seen work is suggesting 2 or 3 hotels. And getting 10 room block at each.

We also opted to contact some airbnb hosts who have several properties. You can link that info on your page as well.

That gives your guests a good jumping off point before they hit the google button to try to source their own accommodations

10 rooms is common here in NJ. They did offer to extend the block if we got more than 10. A lot of our friends live close to venue so we didn't need more than 10. I'd call the hotel and see if you can get more once you fill.

Typically if you book all ten rooms they will release more.

Hi Amy. 10 is very common unless you are having the wedding at one of the hotels. What they usually will do is expand the block as soon as the 10 fills. Hotels make much more on catering than rooms so they are reluctant to give them up. I would get you wedding party to get their rooms secured and then they should increase the block size.

They opened a Marriott Springhill Suites just around the corner. Before that, Best Western was the only decent hotel close by.

Anyway, both hotels are giving my guests a discount for booking through the link on my website. There are no minimums, no contracts, and they let guests cancel 48 hours before so some have already made reservations and can cancel or change as it gets closer and they work out travel plans.

We don't mind if they aren't on the same floor or right next to each other. I just wanted to be able to make travel more affordable four our guests. And they mostly like to gather at the pool or bar but when it's time to go to bed they'd rather have a little space. Our date is not near any other major events so we don't worry about the rooms filling up either.
