Hotel prices

How much is reasonable for a room in a wedding room block? I don't want to price people out but I also don't want to choose rundown accomodations.

I think this is a know your crowd sort of thing. Peoples budgets can vary A LOT, as can their willingness to splurge on hotels. I have relatives who are quite well to do, but still like to look for a good deal on hotels. Whereas FH and I aren’t as well off as them, but we love to really splurge on hotels when traveling. Are you able to do multiple room blocks? Maybe one at a more budget-friendly hotel, and another one that is more of a splurge?

Our block rate was $250 per night. I was concerned about it being high and realized after a while that prices are insane these days and it wasn’t unreasonable.

This depends on your crowd. I would personally not be willing to spend more than $200 a night on a hotel room to attend someone's wedding.

Depends on the area and what is available. We put a block in at two mid-price hotels close to each other One slightly nicer, one slightly more budget friendly. People could choose which they’d prefer but still e lose together.

I agree with the suggestion to get a block at multiple hotels at different price points since people have very different priorities when it comes to hotels. We have three hotels at $175, $250, and $400, and we have people booking at all three.

This is a hard question it really depends on where the wedding will be and what time of year as well as your guests. Near me a hotels can be around $150 in January for a weekend night and the same hotel can cost over $600 for summer weekend night. If you can book a few blocks at different price points your guests will probably appreciate it. Good luck!

Like everyone else suggested, getting multiple hotels is the best way to try and accommodate people. That being said, some may just choose a hotel that they know, have points at, offer an amenity the others don't, etc. So don't go crazy trying to please everyone and their budget because it just won't work. I have 3 hotels - $119, $195 and $235. Three people already told me they are booking through VRBO. LOLOL

Because no two couples or singles have the same finances, this is best left to guests to decide what they can and are willing to afford. Unpopular opinion but hotel blocks don’t work for all groups and it’s the guests’ responsibility to locate and secure their travel and lodging. There is a widespread assumption that blocks are cheaper and that is commonly not the case. They only work when the hotel in question is the only one available for miles in an area that is competing for local tourist attractions/festivals, and they are securing the rooms, not guaranteeing a lower rate. Sometimes the block is more expensive than the regular rate, so never assume. We looked into courtesy blocks and found that they were not cheaper and some were more expensive, at both chains and independent hotels in a major city.

Unless there aren't many hotel options nearby, I wouldn't spend too much effort trying to accommodate everyone with hotel blocks. Like others mentioned, everyone has their own taste in price, preferred company, etc., and group blocks aren't always going to give a major discount. I think our block was $1 off from the price the hotel advertised online. It's best to just give guests a few nearby options and let them figure out what they want to do.

Our wedding was in a major city, so there were tons of options. We reserved a courtesy block at the hotel nearest to our reception, included a link on our website that listed other hotels by shortest distance to the reception, and our guests figured it out from there.
