Hotel blocks

Tasha, on January 16, 2020 at 6:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
My wedding is in May in Chicago. I am having a difficult time securing hotel blocks. What is a good price range for rooms? Should I do more than 1 hotel?

I’m not sure what a good rate is there since I’m in Michigan, but the number/size of blocks depends on how many people you have coming in. Personally we have about 40 people, so I am doing 2 blocks of 10 rooms each. Many hotels don’t allow you to reserve more than 10 rooms to start. I’m doing one block at a more upscale local hotel for $150 a night, and a more “budget” chain hotel for $70 a night, so people can decide how much they’re comfortable spending.

I don’t think hotel blocks are typically necessary for weddings. However, since you are having your wedding in Chicago (on a weekend presumably?), it may be advantageous for you to block some rooms close to your venue. I live about an hour and a half outside of Chicago, and I have had problems finding hotel rooms on weekends several months out. It is just such a fun, busy city with so many sports teams and constant events! - it might make it difficult for your guests to find rooms close to your venue

In terms of price, maybe you could do a block at 2 different hotels - one a bit nicer & one more budget friendly.

I’m getting married in Chicago next August and did two complimentary hotel blocks. I ended up using the WeddingWire hotel room block website (google it) and they give you a number of hotels to chose from. One of the hotels I wanted to book closer to the venue wasn’t listed so I ended up calling them directly.

We chose the Crowne Plaza West Loop and Holiday Inn Mart Plaza and they were $170-190 before taxes per night. We tried to chose budget friendly options for our guests, there’s definitely pricier (and fancier) options out there

I’m getting married in May in the Chicago suburbs and I went with the Hyatt, we have a complimentary room block that they will keep adding more rooms to as we need more. It’s $114 for the basic room and $140 for a suite

I’m getting married in May in west suburbs of Chicago. The first hotel on venues list was “fancy” and was $150-160 a night. We instead went with a Hilton garden inn and the rooms are $99-109 and include breakfast next days. (My wedding is Mother’s Day weekend). But downtown is a different story. Depends on where in Chicago but there are some reasonable hotels there too but more likely average about $150-200 plus parking (spot hero or park whiz for cheap parking).

I got married in NY (not NYC, about an hour north of) and got a block of 20 rooms, each room was about $120/night. I also did a smaller block of rooms the night before (I think 5 rooms) for anyone coming in from out of town that was staying 2 nights. We had 80 guests and all of the rooms were taken up (and then some), so you may want to be prepared and get a larger block, depending on your guest list.

We had two blocks in Denver. One was $90 per room (budget hotel) and the main one was $130.
