Hotel Blocks... Or not?

Kelly, on July 11, 2019 at 3:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
The area I am getting married in is small (less than 30k people) and many of the hotels don't offer room blocking and have said they cannot accommodate parties requiring more than three rooms! So uh how do I handle that when people ask where to stay? I'm not having a large wedding by any means (65 people) but that will definitely need more than three rooms.

Can you get a room block at a hotel in a neighboring city and provide transportation?

How many hotels do you have in the area? One option is do a couple curtesy blocks (no money owed if they are not filled) at a few different hotels in the area. Being that you are not having a large wedding, this might work.

So no hotels will do blocks at all? Maybe just list two hotels to suggest to people that are good hotels nearby?

Are several of your guests in the same families or friend groups? Maybe try going the Airbnb route and have them share?

No the next city is so far it'd be 20+ miles. And transportation is out of budget.

Gotcha. Yea, that is pretty far. I would just list the local hotels on your website and leave it up to your guests to book their accommodations. You can also suggest Airbnb or VRBO on your website as an alternative option.

So far only my mother in law has complained so I figure I'm doing pretty well!
And they won't let you book more than a year in advanced either.
I figure I'll list nearby hotels of various prices and let everyone figure it out, it's a tiny Beach town, its hard to get lost so I'm not worried.

I would just suggest more than one hotel in the area on your wedding website and details card! I would say two will probably suffice to mention for a guestlist of 65. They will then have to book their own room if they need since they don't offer hotel blocks.

We decided not to do hotel blocks for this reason. We would have had to pay for any unbooked rooms and since most of the people are local, they are going home anyway. We did include a little card, that had a few area hotels with their info on it, just in case anyone wanted to get a room. It's worked out fine for us, and our people from out of town havent complained at all about it when we told them our reasoning. Granted, those people are mostly our friends who are pretty tech savvy and can find good rates anywhere. Plus our venue is close to a major airport, so there are about 10 hotels in a 2 mile radius 😂😂

I'm not doing a hotel block. People are adults and can find a place to stay. The hotel that is closest to the venue is a casino resort, so I don't feel comfortable pressuring people to stay there. I just listed several local hotels on my wedding website.
