Hotel Blocks and Postponement

Kayla, on July 5, 2020 at 4:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

So, we just had to postpone our wedding. Fortunately, we were able to get all of our vendors on board with the same date! Now, I am working on updating the website and travel information. I have reached out to the hotel about moving over our block to the new date. I haven't heard back yet, but I was wondering if anyone has done this already and what I can expect. I'm hoping they will transfer the wedding block rate over to our new date, but I realize they may have us negotiate a new rate. I can tell by looking at their website that the rates are higher around our new date. We have a courtesy block, if that makes a difference.

I was able to move my room block with no issues. They said that they were doing their best to keep the rates as close to the original date as possible, though I'm not sure if that's common or if I just lucked out with the hotel I booked for the room block.

I rescheduled to a different season, and the room rates went up from the original season rates. All of our room rates increased. We had/have a room block for our guests. All money paid by us or the guests was transferred to the new date with no penalty. Hopefully you have an easy date change with the Hotel!

Good call - I totally forgot about taking seasons into account! My new pricing is close to my original one, since my wedding went from July 2020 to July 2022. I bet if the OP were switching what season their wedding is, the pricing is more likely to be different.

I moved my courtesy block from July 2020 to July 2021 with no issues and at the same rate. I was worried that my rate would go up because it's peak season downtown, but the hotel didn't even mention it, so neither did I!

We used a service to create a hotel block in the first place, so I contacted the person who helped us to move the date, and I'm not sure if that makes a difference in terms of the price. We were able to get the same courtesy block at the same rate, and everyone who had already booked a room was refunded, but it took a little bit longer than I expected because the hotel had just been allowed to reopen and they weren't returning her calls at first. Also, when they first sent the new contract, it had an earlier cut-off date than we had agreed to initially (1 month vs 3 weeks) so we had to go back and fix that. I guess my advice would be to be patient, because they may be understaffed, but also make sure you read things thoroughly (compare the contracts to each other) so you know to ask for exactly what you want.

Thanks everyone! I successfully moved the block from October to March and they let me keep the same rate.
