hotel block contract question

SBRUESS, on July 23, 2014 at 12:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I finally received my hotel block contract today. I am now questioning if it needs to be revised. I was told I would have 10 rooms to start with for Friday and Saturday. I look at the contract it says 3 for Friday and 7 for Saturday. Then I was told that if those book up they'd addmore. There's nothing that says this in the contract. They also said that I am not financially obligated to pay for unbooked rooms becausr the rooms get released 3 weeks before the date. It states the 3 week release date but it doesn't state I will not have to pay. I just am looking for any advice or is this typical. Thank you

I would e-mail them your questions exactly like the ones you've posed here.

I had the same situation with a hotel block I booked. They said they would take the attrition clause out so I wouldn't be financially responsible then I read the contract and it was still in there. I e-mailed them back and said "Hey X, let me know if I'm reading this wrong but it seems the contract says I'm still responsible for unbooked rooms"

She replied, "That was a total oversight on my part. Feel free to cross that section off and sign next to it and I'll be sure to counter sign with my signature next to it"

I wanted it on e-mail versus verbal agreement so I had a record of it.

You have every right to question anything on the contract before you sign.

The advice I have for this is to get a bit more rooms then you may need. I say this because my room block filled up quickly, and when I went to add more rooms, the hotel was sold out and I couldnt add anymore rooms!! Luckily most people who needed a room were able to get one but it caused me a lot of undue stress during the process. Also, in the contract, does it say you WILL be financially obligated or does it just not mention it at all? if it says nothing in the contract then there is nothing binding you to pay for the unbooked rooms and you should be fine. And if they told you 10 rooms for Friday and Saturday, there should be 10 for friday and 10 for saturday, it doesnt make sense to have different numbers on different days. You should have them fix that.

I had a similar block. I can send you a copy if you want to see the wording to see how it compares. It also split up the rooms. I said I wanted 10 rooms for Fri/Sat. They ended up doing 5 for Thurs, 5 for Fri, and 10 for Saturday (rather than 10/10 for Fri/Sat). I guess for people who fly in earlier. And I guess more people stay the night of than the night before. I think that's fairly common.

Ours also doesn't state "we don't have to pay". I think that's implied when they say the rooms will be opened back up to others and can only be filled based on availability.

Hope that helps -- seems like yours is fairly normal. But, more than willing to send mine your way to compare -- just give me your email!

@xograce thank you. Now that I hsve her email it'll make things simpler. And I won't be so uncomfortable with nothing being written down. These contracts make me nervous especially since every time I sign one my family talks about me signing away my life.

@missG thank you. It doesn't mention anything about paying but I am going to look into the room seperation part. That's what threw me off the most.

@Kylene thank you. That would be great if you wouldn't mind. *******************@*****.***

You're not supposed to be financially responsible. If you don't fill all the rooms you block, then all rooms that you do occupied will be at a higher rate. This is my understanding of it.

I worked for the Marriott for a while, and worked closely with the property coordinator. I also have my wedding block at a Marriott property, so it may differ. You are not financially obligated to have ANY of your room block actually reserved. So no matter if you have one room booked, or 9 rooms blocked, you are not responsible for the ones that do not get blocked. As far as the actually dating of the block goes, they generally have it open 3-4 days depending on what the block is being used for (weddings, concerts, sports games, etc)

For example, my room block is 4/1-4/3 with check out on 4/4. So my block covers my rehearsal date to the day after my wedding. Each day I am allotted 10 rooms, with the possibility of them opening the block to a few others IF they have room availability. We also have to have 10 rooms booked in order to utilize the shuttle service to and from the wedding venue.

What they are telling you doesn't really make sense to me, but it could be because it is a different hotel property. Does your contract have a breakdown day by day of how many rooms are available for that day? As well as the check in and check out date/length of the block?

I had the same issue. Our hotel block has been the most difficult thing we've had to deal with throughout planning. They have told guests the block was full, only to find out it isn't full-we still have 12 rooms left! They also keep trying to change us.for our room, when our contract states it's free. Get everything in writing. I would also suggest starting with more than you thought. There is now.some kind of event going on and we can't add more rooms, and all hotels in a ten mile radius is booked! Some people are staying that we never thought would, so we used a lot more rooms than i anticipated.
