Hot Chocolate Bar vs. Coffee Bar (or both)?

Kaysey, on December 9, 2019 at 11:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 25

I know I have previously posted about having a hot chocolate bar at my wedding in February, but my FH brought up the idea of also having a coffee bar for guests to enjoy with their cake (for those guests who will not be drinking alcohol at the wedding). His thought for the coffee bar is because his grandparents think it's appropriate to have coffee. My FH's sister got married early last month and did not have coffee available when the cake was served and his grandparents were not happy about it - it's been over a month since the wedding and his grandmother is still talking about it. Personally, I probably won't drink either at the wedding (and neither will my FH), but I cannot decide on which one to do, or if we should do both. If we did both, I'd probably just bring a Keruig and get hot chocolate K-cups and different types of coffee K-cups. What are your thoughts?

I don't drink coffee so I personally wouldn't enjoy a coffee bar, but I love hot chocolate. I would think hot coffee would be enough, but if you want to offer coffee then I would do both.

That sounds like a good idea or maybe see if the venue has industrial type ones that you rent for a smaller fee that will save you more money. Some of those have a hot water attachment for the hot cocoa people too.

A Keurig seems like it would form a long line, since you will have to make one cup at a time. Would you be able to get small/medium coffee urns. You could have coffee in one and hot water in the other.

Ummmm two things that ensure my survival Both lol. I usually have coffee with cake and it is nice to wake up and get a bit energized.

Ask any caterer, there's always a small percentage of guests who NEED coffee service at the end of the night/with dessert, but there will also be a lot of coffee left over because it's not important to the majority.

I'm not personally a fan of the taste of anything made in a Keurig, but if your caterer doesn't provide coffee service, then I think the Keurig is certainly better than nothing and having it will please that small but vocal minority. Smiley smile

It seems like if you are already doing hot chocolate it would be pretty easy to also include coffee. I agree with Merline that a Keurig might be a bit slow unless you have a really small wedding and they only hold enough water for a few cups so someone would have to monitor it. If you can get two hot drink dispensers and offer coffee in one and hot water or hot chocolate in the other that might be easier. You can probably rent those somewhere Smiley smile

I can see this perspective as I am in the minority lol. Maybe just a small batch of coffee? Most would probably want liquor or something but for the small minority if it does not break the bank why not?

Lol. I love both but I don't think I'll be having any that night. I'm leaning towards doing both Smiley smile

Our caterer unfortunately doesn't provide coffee services. I think instead of a Keurig, I might look into renting hot drink containers as someone else suggested for each. Smiley smile

That's a great point! I'll have to look into coffee urns as well. Thank you! Smiley smile

We had black coffee with regular cream & sugar available with our desserts. It's pretty common on my dad's side to have coffee with dessert and it didn't cost much extra. They served it with to go cups so I liked that in case guests wanted to take it with them. We didn't do hot chocolate or a fancy coffee bar but I think both would be fun at a wedding, especially during cold weather. I'd think it would be cheaper to have a large stainless steel pot with a lever vs. k-cups. I think hot chocolate in keurigs (or made with water in general) isn't kind of gross so I probably would skip that.

I'll defiantly have to ask our venue. I'm starting to move further away from the Keurig idea because of what some of the other posters have said about possible lines; which I did not even think about. I want it to be easy for guests and not have them wait in line.

Great points! I'm going to look into other ways to do both. Even though I wouldn't drink either, my FH and I want to make sure it's available for our guests. Smiley smile

I don't think I'd be one to have coffee. But I do agree with PP that it seems you could ideally have both rather easily

I think having coffee is important. There's usually a decent amount of people who want it. Even when i go to dinner at a family members' home, etc. I am always offered coffee following a meal.

I think you definitely need coffee. Hot chocolate would maybe be a fun add-on, but I can't see many people partaking, especially with dessert or along with a cocktail.

I think it would be nice to add coffee with the hot chocolate, as some people drink one and never the other it seems haha! Smiley smile

If you’re just doing it yourself with a keurig I’d say just have both options, can’t hurt!
