Hot Chocolate Bar Logistics

Jerrib, on February 6, 2019 at 2:10 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 4 9
I’m looking for all my fellow brides who have done a DIY hot chocolate bar at their wedding!

We really want to have this be a part of the reception, but we are really unsure as to how to do it logistically. I’ll add that my venue does not have a kitchen so anything we would do would have to be made ahead of time and heated up on site.

So what did you use to heat hot chocolate/keep it warm?

And how did you make the hot chocolate? Did you have hot water and then packets of mix? (I know sometimes that gets watery and gross!) Or did you make like actual hot chocolate and have it in coffee urns? I’m so lost here!!

Also, please feel free to shout out toppings/fixings you provided with the hot chocolate bar!

I would look into crock pot hot cocoa recipes if you are truly interested in DIYing it! I've had some awesome crock pot cocoa at holiday parties, cookie exchanges, etc. and you won't have to worry about the kitchen/heating aspect of things. You could also do the crockpot thing and then transfer it into pretty carafes or pitchers, as long as they were sealed to keep the heat in.

We are doing one but our caterer is making the cocoa and putting it a coffee urn. We are serving it with booze (peppermint schnapps, Godiva chocolate liquer, and Baileys), marshmallows, whipped cream, and peppermint swizzel sticks. I've also seen chocolate spoons, Hershey's kisses, Pirouette cookies, and flavored marshmallows/whipped cream (french vanilla, chocolate, peppermint, peanut butter, etc.).

I didn't have one, but I'm a big fan of hot chocolate! 😄 For toppings I would have marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, cinnamon sticks and peppermint sticks or crushed candies. I love the idea of having one at your wedding!

I agree with this. Crock pot hot cocoa is SO good. It's usually made with cream & condensed milk & chocolate chips & other things. I make it every Christmas and people are always so impressed.

I went to a wedding last Christmas with one. They kept hot water in the big containers (sorry idk the proper name) and we were able to make our own with packets. They had multiple types of packets, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, etc.

The bar included: crushed peppermint, whole candy canes, mini marshmellows, chocolate chips, whipped cream, spoon shaped chocolates to stir and melt into the drink. At they bar they had little airplane bottles if you wanted to spike the drink, lol. This was a casual/semi-casual wedding so it was perfect. It was also outdoors.

I did a hot cocoa bar once for a dance and it was a huge hit. I purchased coffee urns at Walmart and that heated and kept the water hot, different flavors of cocoa with lots of mix ins like candy canes, marshmallows and whipped cream. I found HUGE marshmallows and strung them across the table on fishing line, and since there was a drop ceiling I put garlands of marshmallows covered in glitter hanging down above the table. It was really cute!!

My caterer took care of mine. I can’t give you any details because I didn’t get any. But I know we ran out of the coffee so I know my guests were enjoying it, just wish I remembered to get some.

I'm so glad to hear this. My son is getting married in January and is having the hot chocolate packets. I was having a hard time picturing it. I'll mention the different toppings and flavors to him. I don't know if they planned for that.
