Hors d’oeuvres only—seating??

Jane, on October 26, 2023 at 11:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
We’re having a 8pm-12am party with station hors d’oeuvres and passed ones as well. Is it weird to have banquet seating for all? We’ll also have a few standing cocktail tables around the bar. I just don’t think the room is big enough to actually seat everyone only at cocktail tables.

There should be a seat for every person at the reception. No-one is going to want to stand for 4 hours, and people will “save” the seats they get.

Everyone having a seat is much more important than the type of seating. I think banquet seating for everyone would be just fine.

I think banquet tables will offer more space for guests to lay out their small plates and therefore will be more comfortable than sitting at 3-person cocktail tables. Also, it's easier for servers to see dirty plates to clear quickly which is so important at a fresh-feeling cocktail party. If you're worried about the layout, you can still evoke a party feel with live music, lighting, and even colored/ patterned tablecloth choice. I'd keep the standing cocktail tables and throw in lounge seating if budget permits. Best wishes.

I would still have assigned tables in this case, not have it be a free for all. That never goes well.

A table and chair for every guest is essential. People do not want to juggle a plate, drink, purse, jacket, fork and have a free hand, especially in heels. They will leave. Regular round banquet tables are normal for this setup. Cocktail receptions and dessert receptions are the only time where it makes no sense to have place cards because guests don’t have a a reason to be tied to a seat
