Horrible experience with alterations - long rant

#MakeHerABaker, on July 12, 2018 at 12:31 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

I went into a custom sewing and alterations shop yesterday. I've had the appointment for months and was so excited to see what they would do with my dress. The woman was very cold and short with me on the phone when I made the appointment but I told myself that she was swamped with prom season. My mom and I walked into the salon and were taken back to the area where I could change. She came out, started pinning, asked if I liked it, and told me to take it off before we talked price. All very quick and short. I took it off, saw the price (almost triple another quote I got earlier in the day) and she told me to sign at the bottom of the quote. I asked her if I needed to decide if I would have her do it today because I was feeling uncomfortable with her attitude and the price. She said "well, yeah, you really need to decide now." So I told her I'd call by Friday if I wanted to go with her. I went back into the dressing room to collect my things and my mom said she ripped up the ticket, threw it in the trash, and stomped off into the backroom. I am DEFINITELY NOT going with her! Just had to rant. This woman is a professional and has a beautiful salon, but charges high prices and has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Did anyone else have a bad experience??

OMG, I plan to make an appointment later today. Fingers crossed I don't have an experience like yours, but will do research on business first! Thanks for your rant, lol

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at that shop! Yes, I had a similar experience at the first shop I went to. First off the changing room was TINY. My dress barely even fit in the little stall of a dressing room (ball gown). I tried it on and she wouldn’t even help button the back of my dress so I was like falling out of it, then she tells me coldly in front of other customers oh no, you’re far too early I don’t want to work on your dress until September. My wedding is in October and I didn’t feel comfortable waiting that long. She also quoted me like 2x what the salon I actually went with quoted. It seems with many that finding the right alterations shop is tough.

That is way too close to the wedding! Yikes!! I knew I couldn't be the only one who wanted to go to a few shops before deciding but she acted like this was the first time someone asked to decide later. Glad you found a good one!

Yes, do plenty of research. I saw a couple negative reviews about her and that's when I booked other appointments. So glad I did, too! Good luck and have fun!

I had a cold experience over the phone as well. So much so that I told the people who recommended me about it and they don’t recommend them anymore. I too am glad I took my business elsewhere. Generally there are other vendors who will be much more friendly, everyone should shop around for everything!

I haven't had the same experience, but one of BM's told me that, when she was in her sisters wedding went in for alterations and the woman told her to go home and do some sit ups or something equally rude. She was baffled because the dress fit except she needed it let out a little in the waist, another tailor did it no problem. I should also add she is built very thin. It was crazy.

Is this common with seamstresses? My seamstress is also cold in person and I don’t know what to make out it. Maybe it’s because the job is very matter-of-fact but I atleast like a little bit of warmth from my vendors.

My mom wasn’t sure about going with her but her reviews speak for themselves.

That’s terrible! Please write a vendor review to warn other brides. I swear, reviews have been so helpful!

Wow. I'm not at alterations time yet but my coordinator suggested someone great so I'm hoping all goes well when I do meet him.
I hope the other vendor that quoted you is more professional!!

Lol. I just need a quick laugh. Does anyone else laugh at how silly the wedding industry is??? I mean, if you were choosing a doctor or realtor can you imagine them snapping at you or ripping up paperwork because you need to think things over??? 🤣

I'm honestly afraid to because I bad reviews I saw also had a response from her trying to defend herself and attacking the reviewer

Wow, that's just awful! I'd call the shop and ask to talk to the manager and tell them about your experience! That's definitely not a way for a professional to act with brides!

If the manager doesn't do anything either, leave them a bad review to warn others about this!
