Honorary Bridesmaids - Yes or Hurtful?

Jaylee, on September 30, 2019 at 9:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
We are having a destination wedding with family only and decided on only having a MOH (my sister age 15) and a best man (fiancé’s brother) as our wedding party...I have some special cousins who I thought about asking to be honorary bridesmaids. I would love for them to still be apart of the wedding festivities such as bachelorette party and helping me get dressed the morning of my wedding. So, honorary bridesmaids: yes or drop it? I thought since we are having a very intimate wedding party it might be okay, but I don’t want their feelings to be more hurt by being asked to be “honorary bridesmaids” rather than not being asked at all. I thought this might be a way to still have them included. My fiancé is thinking about honorary groomsmen as well. Thanks for your input!

You’re either a bridesmaid or you’re not. I think this is more confusing than anything. You don’t have to be a bridesmaid to attend pre-wedding events or get ready together.

No to honorary bridesmaids. It just really emphasizes that they are not bridesmaids. It is totally ok to have a MOH and no other people in your party. Simply invite people individually to get ready with you, whoever is hosting your bachelorette can invite everyone that you would like to be there.

The only time I have heard of a honorary bridesmaid is when someone is deceased and the bride and groom want to honor there memory.

This! No Honorary Bridesmaids. You are in or you are out. Personally, I spent my 20's avoiding being a bridesmaid so I would be cool with not being asked!!!

They don’t need a title to be included in these things! Just invite them to get ready with you, and to your bachelorette

I would just invite them to the bach & everything, not give them a title. It seems hurtful to me to be like "you're kind of a BM but not enough to actually be a BM".

I find it pretty hurtful. It's like saying they're not good enough to be an actual BM

You don't need a title to go to the parties, or even get ready with the bride! Don't give any titles, just include them! I think "honorary bridesmaid" is kind of hurtful. Good luck! Smiley smile
