Honorary Bridesmaid Sister??

Hannah, on April 6, 2020 at 12:32 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
FH and I are having a destination wedding next summer with about 60-70 guests. We decided that we did not want a bridal party at all to have less stress over the whole thing, and instead we would just invite our closest friends (we want no more than 80 guests including our large family and friends). Recently my mom told me that my younger sister (14 YO) is disappointed that I did not ask her to be a bridesmaid. Even though I have told them multiple times that we are not having a bridesmaid. Do I just ignore the hurt feelings and hope they get past it, or do I ask her to be an honorary bridesmaid to get ready with my mom and I the morning of, sign the license, hold my flowers (and sit next to my parents), while also escorting our mom down the aisle (we don’t have a brother)? I just don’t see the need to ask her to be a bridesmaid because at age 14 there’s not much she can do to help me in any of the planning process. Please give your advice!! Thanks in advance.

That's what I'm doing. Honestly if you have a close family (siblings - younger) tend to be less opinionated - or maybe that's just my experience. My 14y/o sister and my FSIL (21y/o) are my two maids of honor. And honestly they have been asking to help me with stuff every step of the way. Doing things without asking (bought bride tribe shirts, fixed my veil when shopping). It has also made it a bonding moment for us. But it comes down to how you feel. We chose our siblings to be in our wedding because no matter what they will always be family and personally it has brought us all closer together.

I wouldn’t necessarily call her an honorary bridesmaid, but I would definitely invite her to get ready with you and hold your flowers, as well as walking your mom down the aisle. She may not legally be able to sign the license if she’s a minor though? Worth checking as you don’t want it to be invalid!

I feel like you either have bridesmaids or you don't. Being a bridesmaid is an honor, so an honorary bridesmaid is kind of redundant. She can still get ready with you and do all of those things just because she's your sister, not because she's a bridesmaid.

I was 13 when my sister got married I was a bridesmaid and helped her with small things, I mean not much but she made me feel like I was helping lol like going to fittings with her, looking at hairstyles, jewelry shoes etc just together to make me feel more “important”

I was thrilled to be a bridesmaid at 14 to someone whose groom did not want a bridal party. So I did not walk down the aisle. I helped with easy prep stuff. Typed in all the addresses for guests recieved from families, B and G, and calls or emails,I so they could pull up master guest list Learned a stylish writing, very neat and regular from many hours of practice, to address invitations. To keep the master list of gifts as they arrived. And make out an envelope to use for the bride or groom's hand written Thank you notes. Assembled favor bags, ran errands, polished shoes. Helped a neighbor hosting a shower to clean, and bake. Nothing earthshaking. At the wedding, I handed out programs in a nice dress, and was seated up front. When the bride reached the altar, I stepped up to take and hold her bouquet and prayer book. Nothing earthshaking, and I was thrilled to be a part of things for my favorite babysitter, who was also my music teacher for years. Bridesmaids don't have to parade down the aisle. Putting stamps on an envelope is exciting, when it is a wedding invitation packet you have assembled. And I was the one to follow the bride to the bathroom to help her out, and again near the end when she changed to a craving suit to leave the reception. Fast change, help with makeup and hair, everything on hangars and gown in bag. At that age, being helpful is fun. Think outside the usual stuff.
