Honeymoon: Tulum or Playa Del Carmen?

Pretty simple. We're spending half our honeymoon in cancun, half in either tulum or playa del carmen but can't decide which one. We want to sit on a beach, drink cocktails, and hit up some cenotes and ruins. We're young and hip-ish and like exploring the local culture of places we go. We also want to stay in a place that is maybe a bit smaller/more boutique-y than a huge all inclusive resort (since that's what well be doing in cancun).

Ideas?

Go to playa del carmen, I just came back from Cancun and visited tulum didn't like it... too much walking and the beach is practically non existent.

Part of my thinking is that our beaching will be mostly in cancun. we thought that the other location would be good to use for excursions and just lounging with each other, since we're starting the trip in either playa or tulum and ending in cancun. part of me feels like cancun and playa would be two of the same kind of trip.

I agree with your line of thinking--PdC is going to be pretty much the same general category of beach-y drinking as Cancun. Cultural activities are more available in Tulum.

The beaches in the hotel zone in Cancun are rather small. Many of the hotels in Riviera Maya have free shuttles that run into Cancun and Playa. So rather than switching hotels, you could stay in the middle, and then enjoy Cancun and Playa easily from just about anywhere in Riviera Maya. I was there the first week of August. We stayed at El Dorado Royale, went down towards Tulum and saw Unico, and over to Secrets Akumal as well.
