Honeymoon in the Azores?

Annie, on February 21, 2017 at 5:16 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10

Has anyone ever traveled to/honeymooned in the Azores islands? FH and I are leaning towards that as our honeymoon destination (we want a European country neither of us has been to, and Portugal fits the bill) and it looks pretty perfect. If anyone has some first hand experience or recommendations to throw our way, they'd be welcomed Smiley smile Also, does anyone have any experience driving there? I'm kind of a baby when it comes to driving abroad and I don't want the added stress of driving if it's going to be crazy.

(Side question- when on earth are you supposed to plan a honeymoon on top of wedding planning and just normal life?)

My mom lives there and I visit her every couple of years . It's absolutely beautiful . My mom lives on sao Miguel and it's pretty un touched. I can't give recommendations on hotels etc because I stay with her when I go . As far as driving there are taxis and honestly lots is in walking distance or rent a bike Smiley smile

Following! We went to the Algarve region for our honeymoon but I want to go back one day and visit the Azores, that's where my family is from.

(and for your side question, I have literally no idea how people pull it off, we waited until our 1st anniversary to go on our honeymoon as I could not have pictured planning everything at once!)

I don't think a lot of people drive that much on the islands- they aren't that big- my best friend is getting stationed there- and the one island is like 13 miles around (she joked about a half marathon) granted she's on the island that's got the base on it- so I don't know much about the other islands- but I suspect it's not a crisis. Like A.L.S said- biking and walking.

This might be the answer to my post! CDC says it's clear of ZIka! Off to research!

Following! I've been thinking about the same place. I want Europe, FH wants island relaxation. Seems like a great balance. From the research I've done his concerns so far are mostly the lack of all inclusive options or easy to reach dining choices

Oh, I wasn't even thinking of Zika, Lisa, that's a good point! (I live somewhere now where there are occasional cases of Zika, so I'll have to wait awhile once I move til I'm sure I don't have the virus)

It's reassuring that driving shouldn't be an issue. And FutureMrsPrescott, yeah, I was also thinking how easy all inclusive would make planning, but no luck there.

You didn't make any mention of your route, so just in case you aren't already aware they have nonstop flights out of Boston. The airline is small (SATA, recently rebranded as Azores Airlines) so they don't show up on a lot of search engines, but most likely it would be cheapest and easiest to fly up to Boston and use them. They have horrific on time ratings tho :/
