Honeymoon In May

Dana, on January 20, 2020 at 9:08 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

My FH and I are undecided about where to vacation after our wedding in May. We live in NYC and trying to keep prices below $7K. Any ideas? Thank you!

How long are you trying to be on honeymoon? There's a big difference in $7k for a long weekend vs a week vs 2 weeks. Do you have a preference on domestic vs international? What types of activities do you like (beaches, hiking, spa, city touring, etc)?

We would like to go for a week somewhere. We are open minded, beach, hiking, touring...honestly anything. We are thinking something different but relaxing & safe.

    Have you considered a cruise?

I'd agree with the previous poster that a cruise or an all inclusive resort could be your speed.
Cruise can be a good experience if you want to see a little bit of a lot of places. If you'd rather have a more in-depth experience in one or two locations, all inclusive is the way to go. All inclusive might end up being better pricing than a cruise if you and your FH are big drinkers. On cruises alcohol is an extra package while it's part of the resort experience. You may also want to factor in possibly getting sea sick if you've never done a cruise before. With the resorts, you could opt to stay on the beach then do different types of excursions (ziplines, rafting, hikes, etc). My family has done resorts in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Costa Rica. I felt like Costa Rica had the most diverse activity options because beach and rainforest are both accessible, but your experience is also drastically going to vary by resort (and this may apply to cruises too)... how many restaurants they have so you're not eating the same thing every day, whether they do shows/live entertainment, availability of rentals, how many pools, etc.

We are getting married in May and thinking of Iceland. It's a short trip from NYC (you basically fly over the globe instead of around it) and inexpensive to get to, and there is plenty to do and it's beautiful. It's not cheap when you get there however, and may be cooler weather than you want in May. Iceland Air does free "stopovers" in Iceland, so we've thought about spending some time in Iceland and doing a few days in Paris. My FH is French Canadian on both sides, and my dad was French Canadian, and I've just heard its an amazing city. I'm not a huge city person, but feel like a couple days in Paris would be a lovely for a honeymoon.

I'd also suggest Switzerland or Europe in general. Switzerland was my first international trip with my FH (not including Canada) and we had a great time. Great mix of outdoor stuff and city/old town stuff, and super easy to get around by train. It is expensive though; Europe is in general. I've heard Croatia is pretty cool and not as trendy but they have English speakers there.

Costa Rica is also great for US tourists - it's very safe, not that expensive, and there are many English speakers. However if you are planning to try for kids in the nearish future, I would avoid most of Central/South America and areas where the Zika virus has been prevalent. My doctors cautioned me against travel to those areas as well.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Baha Mar in the Bahamas. It was just lovely. Super relaxing and you basically don't "have" to do anything (there's like 8 pools and 20+ restaurants on premise lol) but there are tons of activities and stuff to do if you want (plus it's close to Atlantis which makes for a great day trip). We found it to be a very good mix... the first 2 and a half days all we wanted to do was lay by the beach/pool, but after that we started to get a little antsy for activity, and we found plenty to do.

We spent about $4k for 7 nights which includes the hotel room, food, activities, etc, but that does NOT include airfare (we used miles for airfare) so that's definitely within your budget.

Thanks for that! We decided to book Sandals in Bahamas. We wanted something relaxing and since its last minute this was the closest to our budget

    Awesome!

I would've loved to stay at Sandals if we could've afforded it hahaha. We did a day trip to the island where Sandals is (I think Balmoral Island, if I'm not mistaken?) and it was just lovely.

And we went in early June, so similar timing as you. It was "rainy season" there, so it was actually less crowded than during peak months (I'm pretty sure peak is March-April) and it rained for about 2 hours every day but, when you think about it, we were up and outside by around 10am and it's light outside until 8pm, so when it rained from like 2-4 it was no big deal--probably good to get out of the sun for a couple hours anyway lol. So like it did rain a moderate amount but it didn't interfere with anything we wanted to do. It would probably be less rainy in May though even.
