Honeymoon in Hawaii costs.

Jacquelin, on October 20, 2022 at 2:28 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 7

Hi all! My fiance and I really want to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon, but everything I look at just seems soooo expensive down there; like all the activities we could do. Those of you that went to Hawaii, how did you do it? How'd you plan for it? How much extra cash did you have to take to enjoy as much as possible, and be able to see as much of it as possible? (This would most likely be the only time we could go there on our own)

Follow-up question:

In case we aren't able to go to Hawaii, could you share with me what you all are doing/did for your honeymoon? We're open to anything, but just would really love to go to Hawaii.

My husband and I went to Oahu for our honeymoon! We were originally planning on 4 nights on Oahu and 4 nights on Maui, but pricing on Maui was insane!! So we did 4 nights on Oahu and 4 nights in Costa Rica. We noticed that Airbnb was WAY cheaper than a resort in Hawaii (at least at the time we looked), so check them out as an option! We wish we rented a car to see the rest of the island instead of staying in the touristy area. Check out Groupon for activities - we bought a surfing Groupon for about half of what they were charging on the beach. I believe we also bought some Groupons for restaurants.

Also - Pearl Harbor is free to visit, and the Waikiki aquarium was reasonably priced! Those are good activities/places to go while you're there (if you go to Oahu).

Thank you! I didn't even think about using Groupon! I got excited all over again!

Not sure if you're a member at Costco, but they have travel packages to Hawaii that include air, hotel, and sometimes car rental.

Also take a look at sites like Viator - I've used them for almost every tour I've ever taken on a vacation. I did a full island tour of Oahu and I think it cost me right around $100 - but it was the entire day and included lunch. I saw a ton of places on the island, learned some awesome history from our Hawaiian tour guides, and met some cool people.

Also look at stuff that you can do that is completely free or crazy cheap. Hiking to the Waimea Falls is very inexpensive and a fun experience. As Lisa mentioned, Pearl Harbor is free (there are some things you can do that cost, but going out to the Arizona is free and a very moving experience). We also did stuff like grab food from the grocery story (or take out) and did a sunset picnic at the Tantalus lookout - completely free to do and an amazing view that spanned all of Waikiki, and from Diamondhead all the way to Pearl Harbor.

If you stay away from super touristy areas (Waikiki) you'll find cheaper stuff for food. We splurged on a couple of really nice dinners when we were there in February, but you can find great local places that aren't expensive. Waikiki is the only place, outside of a few very expensive hotels on the North Shore, where there are hotels. So its full of tourists and expensive. But if you stray away from that area, you'll find tons of great stuff.

Also if you're going to rent a car (strong suggest) look at Turo. Rental car companies are very expensive in Hawai'i, but Turo (which is like AirBnB for cars) is literally half the cost.

Also bonus? Beaches are free! And there are some seriously amazing beaches. Best days I've had in the 3 times Ive been to Hawaii have been days where we've gone to the grocery store and loaded up on snacks and treats and spent the day chilling on the beach.

Sign up for Hawaiian Airlines emails too. Sometimes they have CRAZY good sales - I went back in September of 2021 for $198 round trip from Los Angeles.

Yes, Viator is amazing! We have used them for every excursion (land and cruise) in every country/many states we've traveled. If you decide to visit Pearl Harbor, be sure to get your (free) tickets several weeks in advance. They are replacing the docks and have limited boat trips to the actual memorial.
