Has anyone gone to Bali for their honeymoon? We are going to Dubi and Bali for two weeks. Any MUST DO'S, or DON'T DO'S.. or any advice at all?

Thanks!

I have heard that the jet lag can be bad and the time spent traveling.

I would love to do Bali but I can't just hop on a plane for that many hours and only being used to 3 hr max rides. And I don't want to waste time jet lagged. A friend of mine wants to do Greece just as a family vacation but even she said she has to work her way up to longer flights.

Yeah the flight is pretty intense. And I am one who can't sleep on planes. Ill have to ask the dr about a sleep aid i think this way we can plan to sleep on the plane and readjust our sleep pattern.

I googled it from my time zone. Said trip is 20+ hours (and that's from a city 6hrs north in my state) and it's 13 hours ahead of me. I don't think I could take a sleep aide or alcohol. I feel like I need to be in complete control should something arise. Imagine unexpected landing somewhere and you are zonked out. No one can wake you. Have you ever seen anyone on ambien? I have. It's like being black out drunk.

No idea about our honeymoon yet.... maybe Greece, We would do Bali if we could get a good enough deal!

Flying home from Denmark I took a few Benadryl (I have allergies) and slept like a baby! I got home and went on a date that night and never once was jet lagged!

I just did a 15hr flight to South Africa...i know your post wasn't specifically about flight tips, but i brought comfy sweatpants and changed before i tried to go to sleep. I also took off all my makeup and brought a toiletry bag with me. When i "woke up" (LOL I DONT SLEEP ON PLANES) i freshened my face again, applied makeup, did my hair and changed back into my regular clothes (Don't forget fresh underwear, maybe like some baby wipes and deoderant). It sounds like a lot of fluff, but it really helped me feel like i was getting ready for the day and forcing my body to adapt to a new time zone.

We stayed in Nusa Dua which is a very resorty area. Which was great for being on honeymoon actually.

Uber: Uber is not recommended by hotels there, and if you try to use one while in a hotel, the Uber driver will decline. Hotels only recommend you use Blue Crane taxi's.

ATM's and Moneychangers: only use ATM's that are connected to a bank. Only use Moneychangers that are recommended by your hotel. The money has a lot of zero's on it, so try to work out what is what before you head out. It took us a few days to get the hang of it.

Tours: if you are doing a pre-booked tour, bear in mind that a "Full day tour" is about 10-12 hours, and a "half day tour" is about 8 hours. Where I am from, full day is 8 hours and half day is 4 hours, so I was not mentally prepared for that. Our package came with 3 tours.

Shopping: If you are going to a market, be prepared to haggle hard. This was not my favourite part of Bali. I like to go to a shop, see a price, and pay it. Yes, we do have negotiation at markets in RSA, but not to this extent.

Food: Weirdest thing for me was having fried rice as part of the breakfast buffet (lol). The food is good, but beware of food in the markets. Some of it could be sitting for a while, so stick with food that you see is being cooked fresh. Fried banana was hands-down our favourite snack! If you go to a restaurant, the price you see might not be the real price as they sometimes don't include 21% tax. Keep an eye out.

People: The people are so friendly and helpful and are just amazing. They will literally invite you into their homes for supper. But they are also poor. Tourism is their only real industry. Definitely tip when you can and support the locals.

Water: if you are at a hotel, you'll probably get bottled water everyday. The ice is safe in your hotels and most restaurants that cater to tourists. Other than that, be careful with ice. Also, remember when brushing your teeth to use bottled water.

Weather: we went in April, it was quite humid. Stay hydrated! Make sure you stay in accommodation with aircon and a swimming pool.

Alcohol: we found it quite pricey when converting to South African Rands, especially wine! We only took one bottle of wine with us. If I go again, I will make full use of the alcohol allowance.

Clothing: if you are visiting a temple, you will need to have your hair tied up and to wear something that covers your knees (like a sarong). Most temples will hire these for you. They didn't seem to worry about the shoulders too much, but I always had a wrap with me that I could cover my shoulders with anyway (for the sun).

With regards to flying - it took us almost 24 hours to get there. We landed at 6 or 7pm, which was great because we could sleep almost immediately and adjust to the new time zone. We were a little jetlagged coming back though, but that was our own fault because we had an afternoon nap when we got home.

We went to Thailand which is very close. No suggestions on things to see but regarding jet lag I highly suggest you get on Bali time as soon as you get on the plane. Use the world clock on your cell phone and just follow Bali time. If you have to sleep but can't maybe take ZQuill. That's what we did and jet lag wasn't bad at all! We got on the plane at 1:00pm our time and 3am Thailand time. We just went right to sleep and I set my alarm for 9am Thailand time and just made myself stay awake. It was rough! Well worth it though.

@Kristen I meant the duty free allowance. I think you can take 1 litre each of alcohol (stand corrected).
