Honeymoon dilemma

Heather, on April 17, 2022 at 6:35 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

My FH and I cant decide on a honeymoon location/ if we will even go on one. I would love at least 10 full days and up to two weeks. I am a teacher have June and July free or else it's waiting until winter break or next summer. I really want to go somewhere that we've never been but he wants to save for a house which we both want, especially since we are paying for our wedding 100% ourselves. I still want to splurge a little bit but still within a reasonable budget (3k-4k max with flights included). My dream honeymoon would be Italy, France, or Spain which are all way out of budget. My realistic honeymoon is Hawaii or an all inclusive resort in Mexico. I get bad seasickness so cruises are out, even though they would definitely fit our budget.

We live in Texas and he suggests a road trip Washington and passing through California to go to the beach and we can camp in a car tent along the way, but to me that doesn't scream "romantic." We've been together 7 years, and we already do one smaller road trip each summer so it isn't that special, especially since it's 20 hours to California then another 20 to Seattle, then back home which is already at least 6/14 days in a car. We've gotten to the point where we've both kind of given up and haven't talked about it for a month or so.

Is anyone else skipping or have found a budget friendly honeymoon, or have found middle ground? Open to advice on how to bring up this topic with FH to try to convince him we can splurge a tiny bit. I guess it's all the people around us getting married and going on these honeymoons to fun places that has me set on something 'special' and very envious of friends. Who knew the honeymoon planning could be worse than wedding planning! Smiley xd

I think it’s all about how you view your road-trip. We go on road trips too but we love it and feel that spending quality time together uninterrupted by life to be romantic. I feel like we as a society only view fancy dates or trips to an all inclusive resort to be the only way to have romance. Being with my fiancé just about 8 years I get that sometimes thing can feel kind of mundane but it’s all about mindset! But that’s just my opinion. I know everyone feels differently.

We’re skipping a honeymoon as we’re using extra money we’ve saved towards a large purchase we’re making but we’re thinking about maybe a one year wedding anniversary trip.
We’re getting married 4 hours away in maryland so we might take a night or two after the wedding and spend some time in ocean city as we’re getting married 40 minutes away before getting back to real life

I understand where your coming from. You're going to have this special day and you want to top it off with this special trip. Me and my Fh wanted to go to Bali, Greece, or Maldives but his job won't give him the time needed for those trips so we had to downsize, we were looking into different spots in fl. some of the parts of fl have beaches that look like your in the Caribbean. depending on where you go it can be very budget-friendly, fun, and romantic. It can be just the thing you guys need before you get back to reality. you can save the big trip for an anniversary following the purchase of the house. Here are a few places we looked into Lido Key, St Armand's key, south longboat key, long north boat key, siesta key, key largo, anna Marie island fl Marco island fl, Destin fl, Panama city beach fl, Santa rosa beach, rosemary beach, Seagrove. lookup some youtube videos on these places maybe something will catch your eye. once you pick a place check flights and hotels, gather all the info, and then go back to FH and say hey can we revisit that honeymoon conversation, I've found some/a budget-friendly trip that I think is a great compromise for us both. GOOD LUCK!

I totally understand your view of wanting something more relaxing. Florida might be a good spot for you for sticking to a budget. Flights are usually pretty cheap, and I'm pretty sure you can find some deals for getting cheap hotels. You might also be able to find deals in the Caribbean.

Look for pandemic deals. My partner and I got a great deal at Sandals in Jamaica because they needed more business and were running promotions. You also might be able to get a teacher discount. We're going on our honeymoon a year after our wedding so we can save up for it again in addition to saving for a house, but we're going to Italy.

I really suggest going with an all inclusive in Mexico! I found so many beautiful ones when we were still exploring our options. I imagine you can find one within your budget and with positive guest experiences if you search thoroughly. We chose a road trip through Italy, which will be duable on a budget only because we already work and live in Europe. The expensive plane tickets are to fly back to my home state to get married ☠️ but then we gotta go back across the pond either way to start work again, so might as well appreciate Europe while we still work there! 🇮🇹

We went to Greece and the way we were able to make it work budget-wise was to basically split our honeymoon into 2 parts. For the first half we stayed in a budget hotel and did all kinds of sightseeing, day trips, touristy stuff, etc. and barely spent any time in our rooms. For the second half we stayed in a 5 star hotel, and there we completely relaxed and barely left the property at all. In total we did 11 days in Greece for $5000, including flights. This was in summer 2019 so costs may have gone up. I wouldn't discount Europe just yet. There are lots of places besides Italy, France, and Spain that are quite affordable! It just requires some planning

Personally, road trips aren't my thing, and I totally get wanting to do something special. It sounds like an all-inclusive would be the best bet. Not sure where in TX you are, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be too expensive to drive or fly to Mexico. Maybe find a few spots you like that won't break the bank and show them to your fiancé.

Also what are you planning on doing? We're spending around $3k on our Italian honeymoon. Unless it's the flights, I don't see why it would be so expensive.

How about looking into a Caribbean honeymoon? Look at different islands and see where you can find a good deal - pick one and find a lovely Airbnb on the beach to enjoy yourselves relaxing on the sand.

I love that! We are getting married in our hometown, but I love the idea of spending a night or two away from our home

That sounds lovely! That could definitely be a one year/ or five year anniversary goal since we've always wanted to go to Europe

That's awesome and a really good deal, flights are crazy high now, especially since we can only go in "peak season" where prices are super high. I've been unable to find a flight under 2k to any major cities in Europe (direct or 1 stop).

We love beaches, hiking, and sight seeing. The flights are what make Italy hard for us, it practically takes up our entire budget unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestion, I briefly looked into that, but the flights are a tad high for when we could go, but it's definitely on our bucket list!
