Honeymoon cancelled - Feeling Down

John Smith, on April 27, 2020 at 5:08 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7
About a month ago we got notice that our hotel booking had been cancelled due to Costa Rica closing their borders. The hotel gave us a credit and we have to rebook by July 7th.

Today I got notice that southwest cancelled our flight. They gave us a credit as well.
So now I have two credits that I have to either use or lose and I have no idea what to do.
Even if we’re able to pull off a wedding in July, we probably won’t be able to go to Costa Rica. Should I pressure the hotel to give us a refund since they’re the ones who cancelled the reservation?
I’m so stressed.

Can you reschedule for next year, when it will be easier to travel? I know Southwest's rebooking deadlines are pretty generous (at least a year). What about the hotel's?

If the airline or hotel canceled your reservation, they should give you the option to use the credit at future date (usually 1 year) or refund you 100%. I would not be taking a credit at this point. Those are finances needed in an uncertain future. I would get on the phone ASAP and demand a refund.

Yes I would definitely press them for a refund, as they cancelled your booking. I would email (so it’s in writing) that you would are requesting a refund, not a credit, because they won’t be providing the services you’ve paid for. If they refuse I would reach out to your credit card company and see if you can dispute the charge. We had to jump through about a million hoops to get an actual refund for our honeymoon flights because we realistically won’t use the credit. The hotel gave a refund no problem due to travel restrictions (our travel U.K. to Maldives is currently blocked).

Press for a refund. I think legally if they are cancelling and a US company, they have to give you a refund. We had over 10 flights (so 20+ tickets overall) and all were non-refundable. Because they were cancelled due to covid-19, all the airlines issued refunds. The only airlines who wouldn't refund us was fiji airlines. They still gave us credit to use within 2 years though.

Definitely try to talk them down to giving you a full refund. You aren't the one that canceled and whether or not you spend that money towards something else (wedding related or otherwise), at least you'll have it in case of emergency.

My daughters flight in July was cancelled due to schedule changes through South West. At first they called and left me a message saying changes were made. I tried calling back but of course the phone lines are all tied up. I looked up the reservation and seen it was completely cancelled. So I used their chat service, which is worth it, and spoke to an agent, found out why and she stated that the unaccompanied fees were already refunded but I can keep the actual airfare for future or get a refund. Since this was for my daughter to go stay with my dad while I go on my bachelorette girls trip I needed her to travel alone and during that specific time, so I asked for the refund, which was no problem. Only thing she advised is that is can take up to 30 days to actual see the refund with the credit card company. Now I ended up booking a flight to take my daughter and fly right back myself. Since they cancelled they should have the option to give you a refund, probably not their first choice, but if you ask they should give it to you no problem!

Good luck and I am sorry you are going through this! I hope you can schedule your honeymoon trip again and hopefully sooner than later! Sending love your way!
